the broad public does not like chaos and disorder and everything you can do to emphasize that it is the federal government that is responsible for chaos and disorder is a point in your favor. it’s classic nonviolent confrontation!

one response to this (correct) observation is to say “well, the cops will attack you no matter how you dress and behave.” that’s right. images of cops and ICE beating grandmas and kids in inflatable frog costumes is a win for the opposition.

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

One of the front runners in Calgary's mayoral race, Jeromy Farkas, appears to be running on removing Calgary's good zoning and taking inspiration from Patrick Condon and Toronto NIMBYs (pretend to care about affordability and infrastructure in order to segregate).

Lina's definitely running for something though, right?

Many authoritarian states still have semi-competitive elections that must be contested by any dissident movement

And successful revolutionary movements (those that aren't dictatorships-in-waiting, anyway) must shore up their gains in democratic elections
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
I regret to inform you that you will in all likelihood not be rid of elections, even after the revolution
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
It's funny that we've seen a couple bonafide revolutions recently (Sri Lanka, Nepal) where protestors were cracked down on violently, leading to a crisis in which state buildings were stormed and officials resigned en masse, leading to provisional governments and ... new elections!

I think we need to put an enormous number of people in jail, cut enough funding to rural areas that everyone moves, build a bunch of housing, pack the courts and end the filibuster. We need 8-16 years in power and we need to change the GOP into something with different incentives

winning elections is pretty much the only way to solidify the gains of social movements though. and winning them often enough that they can't be immediately repealed.

There's no evidence that the MacArthur BART TOD project drove out low income or minority groups. The median household income at MacArthur station is lower than all the neighborhoods around it that gentrified with little or no development.

Unfortunately for these coal communities, many of the programs designed under BIL and IRA to give them a lifeline have been gutted.

Which means this administration has probably sentenced them to death, shackling them to an industry in terminal decline.

New coal leases in the Powder River Basin have been paused after the first one had only a bid for 1/10th of a penny. They are trying to blame previous administrations, but the writing is on the wall. We should be supporting coal workers and communities not doing wtf this clown show is doing.
US postpones Wyoming coal lease sale after disappointing Montana auction
The Trump administration has postponed a scheduled sale of coal leases on federal lands in Wyoming two days after a disappointing auction in Montana, an Interior Department spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Even had there been a normal primary, Harris probably wins for the exact reasons you describe. Although maybe she is better able to stake out her own path away from Biden
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
Yes, it’s a tragedy that we would have (imo) had a better shot with nominee who could be the “change candidate” and more convincingly distance themselves from Biden, but that there was no likely or pain-free way of getting one
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
In a way there *was* a blitz primary, Harris just locked it down within a few hours lmao
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
I’m not saying it’d be enough to change the outcome (I’m a bit of a doomer there), but I think straightforwardly it would’ve been better
lurkerenvoy.bsky.social
But the concern that Harris was risky because of a too-close association with the Biden admin was unfortunately correct
