It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

Don't take vegan or plant based protein powder.

No, just certain plant and vegan based ones: bsky.app/profile/mich...

what this appears to show is that something is going on specifically with plant-based and vegan protein powders, and in particular there are two that seem full-on dangerous

but there's very little to nothing wrong with any of the dairy- and meat-based ones www.consumerreports.org/lead/protein...

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

From the Larchives: "Midnight with the gang" is probably my most popular RHPS take. Certainly the most tees I've ever sold on RB. Enjoy :)

Stoller made the very elementary mistake of trying to go after menswearguy
@dieworkwear -3h
not true. i've been writing about and promoting US-made clothes for about fifteen years. an early article that comes to mind is my love for 3sixteen jeans, which are made in los angeles. that was published in 2011, the same year the second iraq war ended, a war you promoted

Your weird insecurities aside, you consistently lie that native born Americans can't and never have made clothes, and push offshoring in sleazy ways. Then when confronted you talk about your left wing vie...

This tweet has been doing the rounds on Twitter now that Nathan Gill has pleaded guilty.

If only someone had tried to investigate UKIP & Russian interference 🧐

There’s another timeline where the Guardian supported me, doubled down on the investigation & I look 5 years younger ..

Discworld QOTD, from Monstrous Regiment

“Keep out of the way of officers, ‘cos they ain’t healthy. That’s what you learn in the army. The enemy dun’t really want to fight you, ‘cos the enemy is mostly blokes like you who want to go home with all their bits still on. But officers’ll get you killed.”

The late (or at least severely delayed) Bergholt Stuttley Johnson was generally recognized as the worst inventor in the world, yet in a very specialized sense. Merely bad inventors made things that failed to operate. He wasn’t among these small fry. Any fool could make something that did absolutely nothing when you pressed the button. He scorned such fumble-fingered amateurs. Everything he built worked. It just didn’t do what it said on the box. If you wanted a small ground-to-air missile, you asked Johnson to design an ornamental fountain.

<- you know those Wayland boosters who say there's only one X11 server? Not only is that a lie, there are alternatives to X11, too.

Not really, because the original name is spelled Seán.

The title is the internationalised version.

What about Eeyore? Depressed donkey from _Winnie the Pooh_. No clue how Americans pronounce the name though.
lproven.bsky.social
I think this explanation would be much easier to follow for people from the British Isles if those who are presumably *not* from the BI stopped trying to explain sounds with letters.

It has never occurred to me that there might be folk for whom Seán, Shaun & shorn _weren't_ homophones.

Idly wondering what a public health campaign on this would look like, and why stuff we tried for, eg, drink driving, isn't being used.

I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day
