This is, in a nutshell, why the public are impossible to appease on immigration: no matter how cruel you are, they always want more because they don’t know anything about the status quo.

The blame for this is solidly with the media, and especially the BBC who appear to know no more than the public.
All very amusing, but especially this:

"The most popular was an “Australian-style points-based immigration system,” with a net 46 percent support. The least popular was “Britain’s current immigration policy,” with -39 percent support."

Brits are pining for the pre-Brexit migration system
The idea was that leaving the bloc would give the U.K. back “control” of its borders and create a fairer system. But the widespread perception is it didn’t turn out that way.

a big problem with using statistical methods in the "societal insurance" business (law enforcement, the military, etc) is in a perfect world everybody lives in peace and nobody breaks the law, so they get bored and antsy and false positives give them a reason to spring into action

there is a really old article by bruce schneier where he talks about doing OCEAN or whatever to facial rec in places like airport security lines to detect terrorists, and how this is a terrible idea (due to the base rate fallacy) because the number of actual terrorists in real life is infinitesimal
heh was just in the shower thinking about the impacts of false positives vs false negatives

like basically everyone who works in software I embody this tweet and do not under any circumstances want to talk to my computer

The thing is, if you genuinely believed that preteen girls are old enough to be mothers while males in their thirties are too young to comprehend fascism, then you logically wouldn't trust men to be responsible for anything more consequential than a balloon animal, let alone a government
Mental health care seems to be bad pretty much everywhere tbh

The Open University is a grand institution, particularly for mature students. Used to be much cheaper though, like all of UK education.
The impression I got from OU was always that it was especially good for folks where the traditional benefits (like full time, campus based) are, for some people, explicitly disbenefits because they're mid-career or have specific care responsibilities that make on-campus study hard too
They were bigger than Jesus due to the availability of better nutrition.
It's Gibson's Turing Police at the minimum, the Mechanicum if we're unlucky, and the Butlerian Jihad if no one whatsoever reins these people in.

Long, but well-researched and important thread on Labour's anti-immigration policies. Do take the time to read it.
Very long thread: As with many of Labour's anti-immigration policies, this isn't new. British police have been stationed in other countries for this purpose for a long time
It does however show how Labour is pushing more on anti-immigration than previous governments. 1/

If this does check out though, I am probably going to start referring to them as the Anglican Communion (Marxist-Leninist) for reasons that are much too stupid to go into here.

"We have not left the Anglican Communion; we ARE the Anglican Communion" has big "I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY" energy.
Called it.

Also, while a schism is never a good thing, it was already de facto the case and having the schismatics finally admit it is a bit of a relief.

the funny thing is that you should not have to rewrite the OS to do this. operating systems already run everything else on top of a text-based interface. on windows this is the command prompt or powershell. you do not need to remove anything to bolt an LLM onto it.

In fairness, unlike Ice-9, which would be a more stable form of water, this is just metastable, so a fairly firm kick might easily make it liquid again.
