The right is overcooking this free speech panic, as per usual, but still, if a regulator is going to extend its mandate like this, it should be done deliberately and purposefully by Parliament, not just by the regulator arrogating more powers to itself www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Reup from 2020 (recorded in 2010). This is worth your time if you are interested in the real history of the Taranaki, how Jim Bolger got to be PM, why land, the ultimate means of production, matters materially as well as spiritually

Here's 2.5 hours of Te Miringa Hohaia in great detail on the confiscation of Taranaki, how it was done, why, and its deep consequences.

Bolger's legacy will always be the moral strength of his willingness to look back at the National Party's past and reflect on the wrongs done, and his willingness to say so in an era when it has become fashionable to make excuses for the errors and depredations of the past

I will never take demands for parliamentary dress standards to return to ye olden days seriously unless they mandate the wearing of wigs
lewsos.bsky.social
This is twice as true today regarding the asinine conservative impulse to restore Parliamentary standards of conduct by restoring 19th Century standards of dress

It will be futile unless also accompanied by a restoration of some requirement to adhere to truth and reality
lewsos.bsky.social
Everyone out here wringing their hands about the decline of standards of conduct who did not raise the alarm about this govt dignifying the Treaty Principles Bill lie doesn't actually care about the actual standards, they care only about the appearance of standards

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
