the president has destroyed the east wing of the white house without so much as a word of input from anyone else to build a royal ballroom paid for with bribes
NEW: After The Washington Post reported Monday on the demolition of the "East Wing facade," a new picture obtained by Law Dork that was taken on Tuesday shows that a substantial portion of the entirety of the East Wing has been demolished.

A hill I often die on when lettering comics is what I call "unexpected reading order," where, because of the action on a comics page, the reading order isn't a straightforward left-right-top-bottom (prose editors struggle with this a lot). Sam Rosen does it perfectly on this Spider-Man splash.

In general I’m pretty down on car culture… but I’m not sure we’ve found a better way to introduce an album you love to someone you care about.

You’re together in a little cocoon, unmoving yet blasting at high speed, inside yet outside, private yet public, with a captive audience and time to listen
It’s not the same as sending a playlist, or taking them to a gig, or cueing up a bunch of music videos on the TV. It’s a kind of performative listening, a shared intimacy.

I dunno, how do big-city parents teach their kids about music these days?

I bet that, if you're a skeleton, it feels nice to be delicately brushed clean by an archeologist.

this is accurate along multiple dimensions

they’re getting dumber and more right wing but they are now smarter and more left wing in comparison to the people they see on twitter all day (stupid nazis) which also leads them to be even more prone to dismissing criticism from the left
twitter is making mainstream reporters dumber, and because they're all getting dumber together, none of them can recognize it and they actually think they're getting smarter

One piece of research that really changed my life was that our behavior is often driven by what we think our identity is. It sounds silly, but a mind shift can change your life. A month ago I was not a gym person. Now, I am a person who goes to the gym regularly.

I can't really explain fully why this is the thing of all things that got my jaw on the floor but I guess it's such a literal symbol and also such a jaw dropping amount of money while small businesses are struggling to survive the tariffs

Such a visible "go fuck yourself"
Scoop: Trump has started demolishing the White House's East Wing facade to build his ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the $250 million building wouldn’t ‘interfere’ with the existing White House structure. /W @ddiamond.bsky.social wapo.st/4hqBNiU

I genuinely believe this linguistic phenomenon is linked to a widespread shift in how we process the passage of time
while i'm talking about time periods, i've been thinking about this video about "the twenties" (the 1920s) and how we don't call the 2020s that. also, this channel is good
no decade nickname in the big 25 😔✌️ #etymology #history #language #linguistics

It’s strongly informed by Catholicism and I don’t agree with all of its ideologies, but opera is a pretty Catholic art form across the board
Disagree completely! It’s not a simple work but it deals with immensely rich themes about acceptance and choice. Choosing to engage with life instead of committing suicide, choosing to work on your marriage instead of abandoning it, choosing reality over fantasy, choosing to become a parent.

@elienyc.bsky.social in @thenation.com: "American democracy cannot survive the Supreme Court’s attacks on the Voting Rights Act, because American democracy did not really exist before the Voting Rights Act. White rule existed. And that is what this court wants to return us to with this case."

"much of Trump’s effort to extend his authority across the whole of American society depends on more or less voluntary compliance from civil society and various institutions outside of government. And that, in turn, rests on the idea that Trump is the authentic tribune of the people."
