Oh, the end stop in the penultimate line and the caesura in final line...

How it slows you down, how it makes you think

Poetry has never been the language of barriers, it's always been the language of bridges.

A watercolor drawing of a pheasant in various shades of brown and green. The pheasant wears a little hat with a feather in it and is surrounded by branches with berries on them. The drawing is placed on a brown surface surrounded by feathers, twigs, acorns, leaves, and the artist’s drawing utensils. Drawing by @amberrylamb on Instagram.

Stray birds of summer come to my
window to sing and fly away.

And yellow leaves of autumn, which
have no songs, flutter and fall

there with a sigh.

In remembrance & gratitude
for those who kept us
from starvation

for those whose hands
held out to us,
we filled in turn with sorrow.

May we each & all
never be given only
what we deserve

but instead be taught,
& learn well,
to give as we would receive

What a delightful prompt to start Monday morning. My secret simple pleasure that returns me to childhood joy is flying a kite. I keep it in the boot of my car.

Simple Pleasures

The wind frets at the pebbles,
salt spray burns my face.
The kite jerks like a stubborn gull,
its red plastic heart flapping,
tail tangled, untamed.
Thin bamboo bones creak
as it strains for sky—
a sailboat chasing invisible tides.
I laugh, barefoot, skirt & hair whipping,
each tug of string a pulse returning—
old hands, yes,
but the girl is still flying.

Two #haiku, yesterday and today.
Maybe it's time to get back to writing a little poem daily . . .

first cool night
the silver sound of crickets
slips in the window

such a noise!
two or three mockingbrirds
argue in grackle

(and yes, they really do!)

As her Moonliness probably knows, cherry blossoms in Japanese culture symbolize acceptance of transience and mortality . . . so this is perfect.
