Maybe they're
arguing behind that window
or watching reruns
But there's such tenderness
in light that falls on snow

Black and gold; shade and spring light:
chiaroscuro through leaves
held in this cold hand.
Then - suddenly - November
is spring in Yunnan.

—W.S. Merwin, 1927.

I find this #poem sad but also hopeful. On the other side of bad there will be good. Nothing stays the same.

No matter where we are on our world’s & life’s timeline we can flow forward toward peace and love.

Happy #Thanksgiving. I’m grateful for you.

The sky unlatched a seam,
and a thin blue corridor opened.
Something small and trembling rose,
claimed its place among the quiet,
and disappeared into the hush.

Give praise with water,
With storms of rain and thunder

And the small rains that sparkle as they dry,

And the faint floating ocean roar
That fills the seaside villages,

And the clear brooks that travel down the mountains

To a Husband

Brighter than fireflies upon the Uji River
Are your words in the dark, Beloved.

Grant me a few friends
who will love me for what I am,
and keep ever burning
before my vagrant steps
the kindly light of hope.

A lot of what we call “the canon” is not “the best” so much as “the survived” - the work that got copied, funded, taught, archived, distributed, translated, reprinted, passed hand to hand.
