The GEO Group bills itself as a good partner to the primarily economically disadvantaged communities where it runs its prisons and ICE detention facilities. They frequently highlight their local giving for scholarships and education as evidence of this.

The thing is, that’s utter nonsense 🧵
Screenshot from The GEO Group Foundation's 2024 Annual Report showing $643,100 in scholarships and education giving in the communities where its facilities are located. It highlights the Folkston ICE processing Center, where it gave $7,500 to 13 local graduates.

i think my most misogynistic belief, and i apologize in advance, is that i’ve noticed that, and again i am sorry to say this, sometimes women don’t finish their cans of sparkling water as frequently as men do.

What well-loved milkweed looks like at the end of the season. But man, it made some serious pollinators, critters and tree frogs so happy!
Thank you to all my milkweed: syriaca, incarnata, exaltata, & tuberosa🌸 You all work so hard to feed our ecosystem.

ICE's military raids and masked kidnappings are resonating deeply/negatively in the cultural spaces we keep hearing Dems need to reach: Manosphere, Joe Rogan, country music, disengaged voters. That's rare and it gives Dems a big opening to engage.

Thoughts on this:

ABOLISH ICE and EXPAND THE SUPREME COURT should be mainstream Democratic promises and talking points.

But timidity and civility will rule the day and screw the rest of us and this country in the end.

the extent to which media elites treat liberal americans as if they do not count in the body politic is a real problem
I read the piece. You shouldn't. He dismisses the "No Kings" protests as liberals in blue cities. He invokes Rosa Parks, as if rural white people in the 60s loved everything that the movement then was doing. "We need a movement but not this one" is a core centrist tact these days.

So the "next frontier" is that they will keep kidnapping our neighbors, terrorizing our communities, and pulling guns on us in the street, but Dems will fight for them to be unmasked while doing it? I bet they'll just put those gas masks on a little more often. They love gassing our neighborhoods.
This is good: Rep Eric Swalwell tells me House Dems are now discussing making an end to mask-wearing a precondition for ICE funding.

"When we are in the majority, the masks are coming off," he says.

This is the next frontier in anti-Trump resistance.

If you're anything like me, when you think about the groups suffering the most from unjust discrimination in America today, you think of the crypto, fossil fuels, private prisons, and gun industries.
Crypto, fossil fuels, private prisons and gun manufacturers are pushing for banking deregulation under the guise of fighting against discriminatory "de-banking."

This is the key. Shame works, when it does, because we're afraid of being ostracized; it plays into our need for belonging.

I'm sure that these folks have privately gotten far more sympathetic messages than ones indicating disapproval.
Really? Weird to condemn the logical outcome of what you've spent many years carefully cultivating.

I hope when this is all over and we go after ICE for crimes against humanity, we also go after their partners for willingly spending that money. We should also etch their names in stone so that future generations will see and their families will have to hang their heads in shame for generations.

All but two of the communities with GEO Group ICE facilities have poverty rates higher than the national average.

Too many elected officials take GEO's donations, push GEO's agenda, and then act like their constituents should just be grateful for the jobs. Don't let them get away with it.
Bar chart titled “Poverty Rates in Communities with GEO Group ICE Detention Facilities.” The chart compares city poverty rates to the national average of 11.1%, shown as a dashed blue line. Bars represent rates for 18 cities including Adelanto, CA; Alexandria, LA; Pompano Beach, FL; Jena, LA; Robstown, TX; Newark, NJ; Aurora, CO; La Villa, TX; Folkston, GA; McFarland, CA; Conroe, TX; Karnes City, TX; Encinal, TX; Bakersfield, CA; Philipsburg, PA; Baldwin, MI; Tacoma, WA; Pine Prairie, LA; Laredo, TX; and Basile, LA. Most bars rise well above the national average, with Baldwin, MI notably the highest. Source: data.census.gov, 2023.

Critics point out that most boycotts don't impact companies’ bottom lines significantly enough to lead to policy changes, and they're right.

But if I found out my bank was renting out a room for someone to keep people in cages, I'd still tell everyone I know and would never do business there again.
