Oh, you think Superman is corny? You've got a new hero who could beat him up, who's edgy and swears? Maybe he even *kills* bad guys? You are un chico loco

Invincible and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman says Omni-Man could easily take down Superman, adding, “Superman sucks.” (via Collider)

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

yeah. I know airpods have a "transparency" mode, but the shokz lack of ear-cover is what makes them feel safer for me.

People are far too willing to recommend Golden Age SF to new readers, when many of those works are 1) badly written, and 2) old enough to be read by their *grandparents*.

Tried to keep this balanced between "important" and "readable" - Forever War is a big exception to the HS "canon," but I think it provides an intro to SF that isn't Asimov (etc), and it's more interesting/better written than Golden Age SF, while still moving quickly.

Let's be positive, what are 5 books you'd assign for a high school English class to get the kids on board with literature?

Great Gatsby
The Natural
Forever War
Some of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems + short stories
For a play: pair Death of a Salesman and Fences

my one piece of advice if this happens to you is, those girls you meet up with are not actually into you and are in a theme gang and the gang theme is "girl gang"

have you ever tried to get back to brooklyn from the upper west side with your homies after a gang summit went sideways?

That aggregator account is particularly infuriating. A few days ago, I called it out for lifting video sans credit, date, and ID of person shot. They included almost no info!

People need to stop sharing that account's posts, and all the other creepy aggregators too. They're just rip-off artists.

As usual, Tennessee Holler lifts video without crediting creator. No location or date. No ID of person shot in the head w/less lethals. All findable!

By removing context, Tennessee Holler damages activism and makes misinfo more likely.

a Bike Friend who lives (and works) part time in Denver was telling me how car-dependent Denver was (esp the E. side). I was surprised; she said "CO has a very good marketing campaign" 😂

A theory I've had: the more functional your (sub)field's job market, the less toxic the environment. When hundreds of people are competing for two dozen jobs (at most), they're going to view everyone they interact with as a rival.

Most diagnoses of “academia” (and many subfields) are actually just English PhDs yelling at each other about stuff in English departments

The "fun" fact is this already exists - you can get a CityTicket on the Metro North or LIRR for $5! Service is more limited, but it's definitely a more "premium" experience.

I suspect "globalization of supply chains" plays a role here too - if you can get the same beef, fish, etc anywhere in the world, it makes it much easier to have the same menu. Back in the day, you'd have to adapt to what you could get locally (eg, less fish in landlocked areas).

Fascinating article. The signifiers of "upscale dining" have homogenized: tuna tartare, Wagyu, caviar; no matter where you are, you can enjoy (the same) expensive meal.

It's like eating fast food abroad, except I'm pretty sure fast food is more tailored to local tastes compared to these places.

Entire way of experiencing movies that zoomers will never remember, that people my age barely remember, where you watched something because it was on. Feels like there is an entire genre of movie that was meant to be seen in that format. You couldn’t make Swordfish (2001) today.
