WWII ended in destruction and subjugation. The Civil War just ended with the insurrectionists being allowed to go home with their weapons. And that was that. Nothing changed, no repercussions. Reconstruction was half-assed. Fake equality was begrudgingly hinted at, never fully given.

My wife and I hold hands pretty much all the time. When we aren't holding hands we are connected in other ways. I only wish it was that easily explained. And we have yet, in four years in Portugal, to be asked that.

The Monday after a holiday party held by my wife's firm that I attended, one of her colleagues said, "Gosh, your husband is so well spoken." My wife said, "He's a Chicago Tribune journalist. Why wouldn't he be?" It's the little things. They don't actively mean to be racist. They just can't help it.

Thank you for that. We also see it in the people standing up against ICE, because it is the right thing. I think xenophobia is built in. But that kind of pride still has to morph into active racism. Takes a system -- media images, crime propaganda, etc. -- to do that.

Yep. And a lot of the whey proteins have a crapton of sugar in them, which also sucks, even for someone on 5k calories/220g of protein a day.
