One resident told the Tribune it was “scary” and “a little unsettling” to see reporters wearing riot gear in her neighborhood, but was heartened by the community’s response.

“I’m proud that they’re out here and resisting. I love to see community together. You’re not taking our people like this.”

The often-vocal Botanical Cafe in the Lakeview neighborhood printed out its own “Everyone is welcome here, except I.C.E.” sign to go along with its “Know Your Rights” sign printed in both English and Spanish.

“They are not wanted here.”

“It not only lets these federal agents know that they’re unwelcome and they can’t mess with the city of Chicago, but it reminds the people right now who are scared and terrified to just leave their house, that there are places where they can feel safe and welcome,” said Delaney Ballard, co-owner of Botanical Cafe, a coffee shop that also sells plants.

It’s a small, but mighty sign: “Everyone is welcome here, except I.CE.”

Chicago business owners are searching for ways to support and protect their staff. Solidarity signs have been a quieter approach to denouncing ICE.

this was the exact conversation i had last night w/ my dad who lives in florida.

he referenced the south side raid (b/c that was flashy and on the one news channel he likely watches) but didn't know anything about ICE's daily activities. he was pretty taken aback.

So many people i talk to mention that their out-of-state friends or family have heard little to nothing about what’s going on in Chicago.

Some viral stories like the South Shore apartments raid or Rev. Black getting shot break through but the persistent Fed violence in the streets in lost.

Chicago aldermen have traditionally measured success by potholes filled, block party bounce houses delivered, votes counted.

But with Trump’s deportation blitz in full swing, some are adding getting tear-gassed and handcuffed and standing guard near elementary schools.
