For my course day on music history, I'm going to let students pick a genre to explore music as a primary source. I'll have some songs they have to listen to, then they'll pick some of their own.

What are some "must know" songs or artists in punk, hip-hop, jazz, country, classical, blues, or folk?

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.

Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

A friend in DC got hit in the latest round of illegal layoffs at HHS, after close to a decade of public service.

A friend in Chicago is walking their kid's classmate to school, because that kid's parent doesn't feel safe doing so.

It doesn't have to be this way.

When Mike Johnson or another national leader repeatedly claims they haven’t seen relevant things in the news, an appropriate reporter reaction would be “Holy cow, how do you not know?!? How can you do your job without knowing what’s happening? What are you doing to fix your ‘not knowing’ problem?”

I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

Looking at phones while driving is a real and serious problem.

And trying to look at MapQuest directions and remember where you were on the printed out page was also a major problem.

And a minor problem was finding a spot you could park and not look weird for showing up twenty minutes early.

Everyone's sharing that post about remembering phone numbers -- and I write about it in tomorrow's newsletter -- but there are so many things I can't remember how we did in the pre-digital age. Like I honestly don't remember the logistics of meeting up with people from out of town and stuff.

The same ICE agent who handcuffed Ald. Jessie Fuentes has been filmed in at least 3 other violent encounters, including the viral arrest of a woman in Waukegan in front of the mayor.

“He’s obviously a danger to individuals and particularly women," Fuentes said.

In almost every US survey textbook I've seen, it was "Germany was getting big and scary, and Japan road their coattails until it bombed Pearl Harbor."

"American Yawp!" does a great job on contextualizing Japan, China, the buildup of the Pacific Theater, and the subsequent impact on US actions.

This is at least the fifth time ICE Air has landed in Ghana since third-country removals began there Sept. 5.

We know one of those held additional third-country nationals.

There could be more, because, as I reported last month, ICE flights on military jets are getting harder to detect.

Thank you! That's one of the largest I've done and the instructions were "make it kinda wild." It's for fancy charcuterie at a fancy restaurant apparently.

Today I learned and managed to make some mortise and tenon joints for cabinet doors.

Then managed to waste $100 cutting plexiglass backing to the wrong size...

Decided to apply finish to the coffee table and cutting boards so I wouldn't bang my head on my workbench.

Members of Congress should be on the streets of DC—where many of them live! —putting their bodies between these law-abiding citizens and ICE. Congress should be demanding names, and promising ICE will be prosecuted when US democracy is re-established.

But they are not—b/c they think it polls badly.

New — Video shared with me shows ICE officers in DC detaining a man on Friday.

Bystander filming asks man for his name. ICE agent lies and says he’s not allowed to speak to him “by law” and another says “We’ve arrested American citizens for being too close…If he gets any closer, put him in cuffs.”

This #BannedBooksWeek, I'm reminded of one of the librarians at my high school.

She would assemble a HUGE display of banned books and information about the history of banning literature.

She also moderated the Young Republicans club.

I wonder what she thinks of the present Republican Party.
