‘Economics Nobel prize won by researchers who showed how science boosts growth’ by @philipcball.bsky.social in @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Screenshot that reads:

The award "underlies the importance in investing in science for innovation and long-term economic growth", says economist Diane Coyle of the University of Cambridge. "It's great to see the Nobel prize recognize the importance of this topic," adds innovation policy researcher Richard Jones of the University of Manchester, UK. "It's important that economists understand the conditions that lead to technological progress," he adds. The winners, says Coyle, "have long been on people's list of potential candidates".

Trump doesn’t like the photo lol
Trump: Time Magazine wrote a relatively good story about me, but the picture may be the Worst of All Time. They "disappeared" my hair, and then had something floating on top of my head that looked like a floating crown, but an extremely small one.
Really weird! I never liked taking pictures from underneath angles, but this is a super bad picture, and deserves to be called out. What are they doing, and why?

If the covid pandemic taught us anything, it's that unmonitored viruses don't respect borders.

Cool. Cool cool cool.

The newsletter from agricultural producer news site WATT Poultry is now a primary source of my anxiety. H5N1 is exploding in North American poultry. Every day, a headline like this.

But no human cases. Either there aren't any or there's no testing. Given CDC's dismantling, I can guess.
Headline: "Avian flu invades flock of nearly 2 million Washington hens"

People often dismiss cell biology as just “looking at stuff”, which makes seminal discoveries like this even sweeter. Congrats @drannecarpenter.bsky.social and team

15 years in the making, we confirmed that mitochondria - the powerhouse of the cell - have an unusual localization in patients who experience psychosis (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders). You’ll never guess what kind of patient cells we used to make this discovery… 🧵
mitochondria from bipolar patients are closer to the nucleus in these images; control patients' are spread out further

"News-flavoured content" is such a good way of putting this
cooperlund.online
I've been blaming memes for this, and I think it fits. A lot of the angriest people out there aren't actually consuming news, they're consuming news-flavored content, and the content is a funhouse mirror version of reality that they're mistaking for being real.

This (apocryphal) story about Virchow that I snuck in as a footnote into my book Rebel Cell remains my proudest pun in print.

GPs are going to be hard... most people don't realise that every NHS GP practice is actually a private business.

Yep. The best messaging and comms can't save a duff strategy, although it might mask it for a while.
Also, as a comms pro, I find that if it's really hard to figure out how to talk clearly about a company or an idea, it's a dead giveaway that there's something strategically missing.

One thing that marks out good founders/CEOs in start-ups is they get that communication *is* strategy, in much the same way that writing *is* thinking. So it's not just that they don't have a clear strategy IMO; they're not engaged in the process of developing strategy.

RIP John Gurdon, it was a privilege to meet you and work in your institute. I hope there is a packet of biscuits waiting for you in the heavenly tea room.

Hurrah! Am intrigued to see if we do get any money at all, and how much it is at the end of the day. But worth a shot.

Henceforth the red robes will only be worn as an away kit when the Canadian Supreme Court is playing the US one.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe

I struggle with hotel pillows as I am a side sleeper and have a tempur memory foam neck pillow at home. I got a travel version that rolls into a little cylinder and it has been brilliant once I got used to it
