“This Might Surprise You: A Breast Cancer Story” is out now.

It’s a graphic memoir: comics can do things that no other medium can. I’ve tried to be as honest as possible while also making you laugh. I’ll break your heart while giving you a hug.

Love Hayley's rendition of the Rosemarkie Pictish cross-slab here. This is a very puzzling monument. Why does it have no figural elements, like the Tarbat slabs with their hunters, or the Conan Stone with its mythological figures? Is it because Rosemarkie was a bishop's see, not (just) a monastery?
My WIP is about Pictish symbol stones and modern international politics/misinformation.

(It’ll make sense eventually.)

Still early days but one of the big challenges is drawing Celtic knotwork. Every single pattern has to be learned from scratch.

Still, I’m pretty excited about it.

I’m very happy to keep talking about cancer, but…

I don’t want to be talking about cancer forever.

Crazy, I know!

How do you hang on to your humanity in the face of something as dehumanising as cancer treatment?

I have some insights.

The idea of “playing the cancer card” is a useful one but it can’t give you full diplomatic immunity.

My Christmas cards are starting to reach people and this warms my heart

(I design my own cards each year and this brings me great joy every time)

(And they’re not even slightly cancer-themed this year!)

What more can any of us ask for, really?

I really enjoyed and appreciated this graphic memoir - a funny, moving and above all honest account of navigating the realities of cancer treatment at the age of 37.

I appreciated being called brave if I felt the person genuinely meant it and wasn’t just saying it to distance themselves. It still doesn’t feel like the right word, though. How can one be “brave” when simply reacting to a dreadful situation?

First sentence: "Millions of men are set to be denied routine prostate screening"

How about: "Millions of men are set to avoid harm and NHS to avoid wasted money through poorly evidenced screening programme"?
This is what happens when as a single condition health charity you’re overly focused on those who die of your condition and you don’t consider outcomes for those who don’t, or the opportunity costs involved for NHS. PCUK are particularly guilty but they’re not alone.

Start prostate cancer testing regardless of advice, Wes Streeting told
NHS advisers are expected to rule against a mass programme for the disease, which causes more than 12,000 deaths a year

Compliments can be just as dehumanising as insults if they are used to skate over the reality of the situation.

If only someone had recently published a book that really humanises the impact of bureaucratic malfunctions in the NHS… 😎

My book is available in the UK and USA from all good bookshops and online outlets, including the publisher, Bloomsbury Green Tree.

It’s one of NPR’s “Books We Love” 2025 so why not get a copy and see for yourself why it’s getting great reviews…

The transformation of Hayley

I think the cartoon medium is ideal for showing how my appearance changed throughout cancer treatment.

It wasn’t just external changes, though.

I’m now a cartoonist. I wasn’t before - at least not in any serious way. I’m serious about it now.
