Hello! Quite a few new followers. I'm Karie, a Danish woman living in Glasgow, Scotland. I've written a knitting book about Early Modern printing, teach psychogeographical craft workshops, stamp books, make my own jeans, and married someone from Clan Fraser before it was cool.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

My hairdresser, the lovely Antonio, was quite careful when he told me I needed to spend time styling my hair.

Trust me, my version of "styling" isn't as time consuming as drying long hair. I'll cope.

Haircut. Yes, I work in arts and heritage.

Also, the dark & dim room that house the Gutenberg bibles is a bank vault with fire doors. You know, in case there is an attempted robbery or a fire.

Of course everything being housed in an interim building might have changed that but .. I understand the set-up.
kariebookish.bsky.social
That makes sense if it's interim. The original building is purpose-built so it might be under renovation.

🌿 We're thrilled that The Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Dumfries has become a designated landscape, following assessment by Historic Environment Scotland and support from C20. Developed gradually between 1988-2012 by Charles & Maggie Jencks, the garden is a work of outstanding artistic importance.

This does not match my experience of the Gutenberg Museum at all. There being no mention of Asian printing is deeply baffling to me, to say the least.

Granted, I was last there pre-pandemic but surely whole rooms could not have disappeared.

I don't normally like dumping on honest pros doing their job but I've just been round the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz and am disappointed to the point of fury.
kariebookish.bsky.social
There is a room dedicated to Asian printing with a very big display of a Chinese type tray?

I'm fairly sure I did not hallucinate that one.

"Magna Carta and the Bill of Rights are not and have never been part of the law of Scotland" 😭

I read an instructional manual not long ago that was so very, very patient at spelling out things like "now turn the page" and I felt so sorry for whoever had worked on tech support for that thing.

"Now turn the page for further instructions."

I can FEEL the pain from here.

If there is a bit in a FAQ that makes you go "why is this weird tidbit included" then you know that weird tidbit has been A Recurring Incident.

It’s the 111th anniversary today of the birth of Harry Rée, who was a teacher and conscientious objector when the Second World War broke out, and by the time it ended, when he was 31, had invented ‘blackmail sabotage’ and got a DSO, an OBE, a Croix de Guerre, and a Medaille de la Resistance

In her life, Marilyn Monroe was exploited and abused by so many men.
Studio executives, so many people.
After she died, men continued to exploit her for their pleasure: trying to get themselves buried near/above her.
What your writer did here is obscene, nonconsensual and makes me feel slightly ill

Sometimes there'll be a joke written by someone who's been dead for tens, hundreds of years & i'll stop and think about another human reaching through time to make another human laugh, long after they're gone, and it's so beautiful it makes me well up.

Wired: pausing mid-heist to read the extended edition of the Lusty Argonian Maid
Burglar in Rome got distracted by book.

A burglar who broke into an apartment in Rome on Tuesday night was ar-rested after stopping in the middle of the robbery to read a book about Greek mythology.

The man, a 38-year-old Italian, gained access to the building in the Della Vittoria district from the balcony but became distracted after seeing a book on a bedside table.

However the owner of the property, a 71-year-old man, woke up and con-fronted the burglar who was reportedly sitting on a bed absorbed in the book.

Spooky bird stories. Last year's Halloween comic.
A comic titled Spooky Bird Stories. In panel 1, a turkey vulture is telling stories to other vultures, and it says, "She walked toward the source of the terrible smell. She got closer and closer, and then, to her horror, she saw... No dead body." A black vulture says "No!" and a turkey vulture says "Did someone already eat it??"
In panel 2, a northern cardinal is telling a story to some songbirds. It says "They peered through the windows of the house at the gory scene. Zombies had smashed through the door in the night. The homeowner was dead. But worst of all... He hadn't refilled the feeders." An eastern bluebird says "Aaah!" and an American goldfinch says "It can't be!".
In panel 3, a screech owl is telling a story to other owls. It says "And then the ghost fluffed itself up really big to appear scarier." A saw-whet owl gasps, and a long-eared owl says "Horrifying!".
In panel 4, a downy woodpecker is telling a story to other woodpeckers, and says "The eerie sound rang through the dark woods. Tap-tap. Tap-tap. It was the distinctive two-part knock of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The species had returned from the dead... FOR REVENGE." A red-cockaded woodpecker says "Yesss".
