overwhelmingly, the thing that motivates a young person to become a movement conservative is racism, specifically anti black racism. the conservative movement does care about other things, but racial animus has been the primary motivating factor for entry into the movement for decades.

The unifying theory of all American conservatives is that they all demand that you be their friends at gunpoint, and tell them how handsome and special they are
mugrimm.bsky.social
The conservative project always makes much more sense when you realize it's just run by upper middle class American christian nationalist who are basically completely fine in material position but furious the entire country doesn't bow to their weird cultural preferences.

the left is actually so weak in this country that they whittled their demands down to "let us talk about gaza once at the convention for 15 minutes" and the party still refused

Leftists are just wreckers. They are a huge part of why we currently have no bench.

can we all at least agree that no one should ever be criticized for any reason

Saw him pitch for the Long Beach Armada in Calgary at the last game I ever attended with my dad on May 21, 2009. I remember it was freezing and Lima gave up a long home run. Wild to realize he passed the following year a few months before my dad. lbpost.com/sports/armad...

Jose Lima went eight innings, but the Vipers took down the Armada in game one.

I very much take them at their word. I mean, their “elders” and mentors and managers are currently governing like mass death is an important part of the platform.

Yes, she went by May White during her courtesan days. There was an 1884 incident at a Baltimore brothel she witnessed her friend's murder. She was from Utica originally, don't know how she ended up in Toronto. She went by Carrie Morrison rest of her life and died in 1927 in Cincinnati.

Am giving a Zoom talk tonight at 8PM Eastern about the collapse of the Brooklyn Atlantics, who won the greatest game in baseball history on June 14, 1870 ending the Cincinnati Red Stockings 84 game win streak, but by 1875 were the worst team in baseball history. Sign up: sabr.org/19th-century...

Have you read the Hoss Radbourn book by Edward Achorn? Has really good detail on all the drama with Sweeney and Radbourn
justmckinney.bsky.social
The reason for Sweeney's tantrum was part disdain for Old Hoss Radbourn, part irritation with management, but primarily that he had a standing offer from Henry Lucas to jump to the Union Association. Sweeney jumped and Providence paid Radbourn double his salary to pitch every game down the stretch.

Yeah, the last sighting of him is in Toledo circa 1900 - his wife Carrie Herbert, who was once a famed Toronto prostitute, filed for divorce based on neglect that year. A man of the same name with some biographical overlap died in Toledo in 1905, but can't confirm it is him.

Charlie Sweeney at San Quentin.

Vadeboncoeur's final Phillies' appearance was on July 22, 1884. This is the game where Charlie Sweeney, Providence's ace hurler refused to leave the pitcher's box, quit the team and watched rest of game in the stands with 2 prostitutes. Providence finished the game with only 8 players and lost 10-6.

The Hurons also had Jon Morrison, another Canadian who happens to be missing as well. I'm doing a presentation on the missing Canadian players at the Canadian Baseball History Conference on Nov 1 at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary's, Ontario. baseballresearch.ca/wp-content/u...

Beck is a missing player, who disappeared around 1901. The Port Hurons were lead by Bill Watkins who was the first Canadian manager to win a World Series with Detroit in 1887 - to date Rob Thomson is only other Canadian to manage in the World Series.

Well, he was a missing player until a few years ago when Tim Copeland found him. He died in Sacramento in 1893. He was also the first Quebecer to play in the majors. He was on the 1883 Port Huron club, which featured a bunch of Canadians where formed a battery with Frank Hengstebeck (aka Frank Beck)

I am happy hostages on both sides are going home, but I have zero faith that war criminals whose whole identity is rooted in cruelty and destruction are going to be the brokers of peace all of a sudden.
