As a historian of the American West, I would also argue that western cities (except LA) have been largely neglected in our social, intellectual, and political narratives. So their very unique and specific cultures often come as a surprise when they momentarily enter the national frame.

For a very long time, this weird libertarian mishmash basically ran under the national radar because Portland was so small. But the whole time, my understanding of Portland was as a place where absurdist, self-determining approaches to everyday experiences were the norm.

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

To summarize,
it seems likely that British people were introduced to the oat-based ANZAC biscuit that Australians were sending in care parcels during the First World War and—for reasons unclear—began calling similar oat bars “flapjacks” around 1928.

In the US, flapjacks continued to mean pancakes.
