“many prominent young republicans are actual Nazis” is a self-censoring fact at this point

normie swing voters will literally refuse to believe it and the media refuses to report it because it would call everything else they’ve done into question
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
while 'young republicans are literal nazis' is well known to folks here, the extent of it is surprisingly not that commonly known even in media and analyst circles, let alone normal people.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

"We're saving God" is, like, hit-by-lightning levels of presumption. Genuinely incredible to me that someone claiming to be Christian can say with a straight face that God needs to be saved from woke.

Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

In practice, though, on every issue where it mattered, the conservatives of both parties voted as a bloc. Multiparty systems don't really work in an environment where everyone is already polarized around a few rigid culture war issues anyway.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
In fact, we know this because it effectively already happened in the 1930s-50s. The US had a multi-party system in all but name during that period, with Republicans and Democrats each having conservative and liberal wings that often functioned more or less as separate parties.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
I don't think the two-party system is really the problem. If we implemented a multiparty system here, it would very quickly just collapse into two polarized coalitions that occasionally break with each other over minutiae.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
In fact, "win every election" IS authoritarianism. Perpetual one-party rule is deeply corrosive to a free society in every case. No party is good enough and robust enough to avoid becoming stale and corrupt if it constantly has carte blanche.
jakemgrumbach.bsky.social
“Win every election” is not a viable strategy for preventing authoritarianism
jfloyd314.bsky.social
The Dispatch Republicans got so incredibly high on their own supply of "See, Trump's not *that* bad" that they actually started believing, against all available evidence, that he was just George Bush with mean tweets.
unavaleable.bsky.social
yeah i don't think i ever appreciate how well constrained Trump was during his first term and how everyone kinda assumed that would happen again without putting in any of the work
jakemgrumbach.bsky.social
The siren call of electoral strategy and analysis partially crowded out work on things like law, organizational resistance, and protest. I blame myself, too
jfloyd314.bsky.social
The thing is, repurposing doesn't help when the institution is so internally rotten. ICE is willingly and gleefully carrying out mass abuses of civil rights. You would need to fire nearly everyone currently working there anyway, and at that point, why not get rid of the organization?

I’m not sure that refusing to sign onto this actually limits access with Hegseth’s behavior seemingly leading to more leaks
jfloyd314.bsky.social
This is a fairly big deal in the sense that it marks the first time under Trump 2 that the largest legacy media outlets have chosen to stand on principle instead of selling out for access. I have no idea if this sudden spurt of civic courage will continue, but it's interesting at least.

I don't think this administration is ready for the backlash that will continue to build as Stephen Miller and Tom Homan keep pressing these extreme and deeply unpopular policies, transparently victimizing and harming innocent people for no reason other than to satiate their own cruelty.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
It's rare because we have always had a strong ethos in America that this is not a "show me your papers" country and that the standard for the government to stop you and require legal identification is and should be very high.

For the record, I still think this ethos exists for most Americans.
jfloyd314.bsky.social
This is another example of our immigration law being incredibly stupid and broken in a way that this administration is able to exploit. Technically, 8 U.S.C. § 1304(e) does require legal residents to carry proof of status on their persons at all times, but it's extremely rare to see it enforced.

(3) is a LLM "like a human being?"

human beings are orders of magnitude more sample-efficient than LLMs. there is no biological mechanism which would permit a human being to learn in the way a LLM does, and that way is vastly worse than human learning.

Really bad: nitpicking other people's responses as insufficient while your own grand plan consists either of shilling for Soviet Communism on Bluesky or advocating for people to point lasers at manned aircraft.

Good: urging people to break out paralyzed stasis and exercise their agency to proactively seek solutions to problems

Bad: insisting that the agency for solving problems falls with other people and you yourself should simply be mad they are not being solved for you

It is absolutely essential that Democratic decision-makers be made to understand that "Abolish ICE" is the one and only acceptable position for them to take on the matter.
meredithshiner.com
It’s impossible to overstate how much “abolish ice” is the normie position now here in chicago — just countless random moms at toddler soccer on a park district field asking me where I bought my anti-ice t-shirt. average people don’t like our neighborhoods being terrorized.

It's very funny that the people saying "hey kids, it's cool and good to shine lasers at aircraft flying over populated areas" today are the same people who said a couple of weeks ago that anyone who gives Indivisible their email address is getting black-bagged for sure.

someone on the Internet who really wants to convince you to shine lasers at manned aircraft as a protest tactic “because they did it in Chile in 2019” is either:

1. a fascist fed, or,

2. so terminally stupid that they have become functionally indistinguishable from one
