I've met people - smart people! - for whom *any* analysis of deeper meaning, looking at metaphors, parallels, symbolism, ruins their entertainment. They'll use that exact word: "That would ruin it for me."

I don't know why this is (though I have theories), but it's absolutely a thing.

There are folks for whom TV shows are fundamentally the same as a nice view from a scenic overlook.

"That's a pretty thing to look at." They don't need to be fascinated by the geology, or also be birdwatching, etc.

Once I looked, seriously wild how few alcohol, cannabis, drug themed games there are in the TTRPG niche. So few as to be statistically zero. Sooo... imma set up a "holiday indulgence" jam to run through New Year or something, one in march ending 4/20 for 4/20 next year. Gotta fill the gap!

TTRPGs as a niche have such a weird puritan streak. In recent years we've gotten a solid handful of games for romance and sexy themes (and a real solid pile of queer themed games). But we're still barely nibbling at edges. Really weird how few cannabis or alcohol themed games there are.

and maybe i can't just spend $15k to make 3 very good looking softcover books. so the crowdfunder lets me bundle together 3 smaller riskier projects and also hopefully buoy their sales even if any one of them might not be worth making a CF on its own

yea like. if i'm a small publisher i can spend $5k and make a very good looking softcover book without breaking a sweat. the problem is ... if i do that, and then i buy 1k copies, and no one cares, i'm fucked

like they're going to get published either way, the question is:
- how are you managing the preorders for it
- how are you promoting it
- how are you engaging with your audience about it
and then the question becomes, is 1 medium CF better at those goals than 3 small CFs

i think maybe the thing worth remembering is that from the point of view of a publisher (such as CMU press, possum creek, etc.) generally these small projects are publishable even without the money from the crowdfunding
