All I ask is that Radio 3 play all the movements a composer wrote. I know this ship has sailed so far over the horizon it is now upsidedown. But JEEZ we are not gnats with gnat-sized attention spans.

I don't send out individual chapters. Readers get the whole thing.

Good news: a grant I submitted got selected for an interview out of ~150 apps. Only 2 others got interviews!

Bad news: @skypeascientist.bsky.social was not selected in the end 😞

I will keep trying.

In the meantime, consider supporting our work with $5-10/month?

The newsletter from agricultural producer news site WATT Poultry is now a primary source of my anxiety. H5N1 is exploding in North American poultry. Every day, a headline like this.

But no human cases. Either there aren't any or there's no testing. Given CDC's dismantling, I can guess.
Headline: "Avian flu invades flock of nearly 2 million Washington hens"

This is a powerful account from a PhD student whose fellowship was terminated by NIH because it was part of a "diversity" program without any other considerations or understanding of what the program or the students were actually doing.

Albert Einstein's violin just sold for over $1,000,000, well above the expected price. Fine violins are valued for their quality as instruments, and for their history, including who played them. This was Einstein's first violin he bought at age 16, and sold in 1932 before he emigrated to the US.

There are many musicians among great scientists, but none more notable than Albert Einstein. He played the violin very well, and often practiced while solving physics problems. His violin, made in 189...

Fifteen years after one family’s $98,000 second mortgage was canceled, a debt collector showed up demanding nearly $200,000. When the family didn’t pay, the company foreclosed. It wasn’t a mistake. It’s a business model.
How Debt Collectors Spin Riches from Zombie Loans
Bloomberg News obtained a trove of internal records from one debt collector that reveals how the industry uses large bills and threats of foreclosure to blindside homeowners across the US.

Elon Musk’s DOGE never came close to cutting as much money by Sept. 30, when the government closes its books on the fiscal year, as he promised. Because its work has been obscured by crude accounting and White House maneuvers, it’s impossible to know how much DOGE actually did cut from the budget.
Not Even Congress Knows How Much Money DOGE Cut
Elon Musk’s team started a behind-the-scenes push for White House control over federal spending that is now an undercurrent of the government shutdown.
