OMIGOD, YES!

When I took a bite of an Impossible burger, I nearly spit it out. <shudder> I'll never knowingly order one. It's bad, because a "veggie burger" is often the only option on the menu.

I've been a vegetarian for 30 years. My taste buds have _changed_.

I joined the Pittsburgh Overpass Project (POP) on the Greenfield Bridge yesterday. If was fun meeting the other folks!

Here in PA it is critical to turn your ballot over and vote YES to retain the judges that are protecting our rights! Every judge on the ballot is a Democrat -- Yes for all of them.
The smaller sign faced the traffic crossing the bridge: PROTECT FREE SPEECH RESIST CENSORSHIP It's a very tall bridge, so we had the sign with _big_ letters facing the rush hour traffic below: VOTE YES TO RETAIN OUR JUDGES Woman in a wheelchair wearing a grey hoodie holding an American flag.

Endorsement alert! Thank you,
@stonewallpgh.bsky.social for your support and trust!

I am deeply honored to receive this endorsement. For years now I have seen the tireless work that the organization does to promote equality for the LGBTQ+ Community. I am proud to stand alongside them.

According to a new study
by Yale researchers
Covid-19 continues
to be driving a large number
of work absences,
which is an important reminder
that it is not the case
that people are “quiet quitting,”
rather it’s the case
that this virus just won’t quit.

I frequently say you don't need to protest. You don't! There are a thousand other ways to push back on fascism if protesting doesn't feel comfortable or safe for you!

But if you CAN go, this 10/18 #NoKings thing is really a key protest to participate in. Be part of it, friends.

NO KINGS, y'all! October 18! Find a rally near you and GO!

As if these groups weren’t trading and traveling. What an idiot.

Gee, do you suppose waves of pandemics from multiple diseases may have been more of a factor that “lack of curiosity”?

I had glanced at a McCarthy book, and was put off by how he didn't use quotation marks for dialogue. It seemed precious and annoying. A friend told me to dive in anyway.

I did, and was bowled over. He didn't need no stinking quotation marks! I also only read one of his books -- too depressing.

City council gives you the power to pass one single law to make things better.

What is your city, and what law do you pass?

The damn Columbus statue is still there, and the tarp has come loose.

The city decided to remove it several years ago, but the "Italian Sons and Daughters of America" have that tied up in court.

At least I did hear that Little Italy Days was weak sauce this year.

I will always treasure the time that I got to tell the Ancient Near East specialist in the classics & near east department that Ea-Nasir was not only known to randos outside of her field, but had a fanbase and memes.

(She was baffled but pleased, and corrected my pronunciation of his name.)

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”
