Just noting this is not a “full” government shutdown. A real shutdown would mean lights out for ATC; no weather radar or satellite data. No weather forecast modeling output. No SS checks. This is just a slice of everyday federal services Americans take for granted.

Shutdown for me means working from home. Yes, I am fortunate; just miss interacting with colleagues SO MUCH 😞
Also pandemic memories are lurking and I feel a bit trapped. My colleagues who are working without pay are trapped in a different way. May we have some sanity in Congress soon. 🙏

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Just a reminder that NWS is considered essential during a government shutdown. Meteorologists will still go to work, forecasts will still be made, watches and warnings will be issued, data will flow. We won’t be paid until the shutdown ends, but we’ll still protect life and property as always.

Some feds work through shutdowns. For the millions of others (feds and affiliates), hours will be spent tomorrow in planning meetings. Then hours preparing to work remotely (me) or to be unable to work for an unknown period of time. Wasting taxpayers dollars thanks to a dysfunctional Congress. 😡
