In #Switzerland, fine for a speeding driver is based (1) on how far over the limit the driver is going
(2) on how much the driver earns.

One man caught driving his Ferrari at 137 km/h the in an 80 km/h zone in a village near St. Gallen was fined 300,000 Swiss Francs (today, $375,000 US).

This kind of shit is rampant in rich parts of the Bay Area. There should be more teeth to state housing law. If you're not zoning in good faith, cities should face more consequences. I have an idea for how this could be done. 1/thread

Los Altos Hills CA is up to their old tricks, to get out of allowing homes for the people who can’t afford the $5.7M houses there. The rich exclusionary town has to zone for multifamily housing, but they don’t want to, so they’re weaseling. 🧵1/7

Remember this when people quote collision data and say that "speed isn't a factor" so reducing the speed limit won't positively affect road safety. It's always a factor, despite what the police write in their incident report.
brenttoderian.bsky.social
Remember, whenever you hear that “speed wasn’t a factor” in a deadly crash, what they mean is that the car involved wasn’t technically speeding. At least “not by much.” It presumes that the speed limit wasn’t too high to begin with.

When it comes to death from collisions, SPEED IS ALWAYS a factor.

Trump on LA: "They already lost 25k houses to fire because they wouldn't let the water come in from the Pacific Northwest. They didn't do it and we had 25k homes where they had no water in the sprinklers, they had no water in the fire hydrants. We broke in and had the water come down."

Fairly certain if we hadn’t built places like this 200 years ago we’d never allow ourselves to build them today.

Imagine being in the first public meeting proposing this level of density to Newburyport today…

Not only has the US killed 27 people (by its figures, independent verification obviously being difficult), they haven't presented evidence or any real legal authority to justify this. Even as they formalized it under a task force.
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

Without street parking, surface lots, and parking garages, Oslo’s busiest shopping district is left abandoned. Only robust transit, bike paths, scooters, and tons of places to sit remain. Sad. #BanCars

The Governor and I have done incredible work together across many issue areas…

But this is beyond disappointing and we cannot stop pushing for what our people deserve. Especially in this moment.

Meanwhile the CA legislature is bailing out refineries and expanding oil drilling to keep car sauce cheap but barely finds transit operations. People displaced from CA's few transit-friendly areas by housing costs are taking on heavier transport burdens with no real solutions from the state.
amb.fyi
i have a handful of theories as to why, but none of them fully explain why we've managed to get all on the same page and fully radicalized on how expensive housing has become but the closest anyone gets to noticing transportation is also expensive is "gas prices are too damn high"
nondriver.bsky.social
AAA estimates the average cost of owning a car is $12,297 a year, and recommends drivers spend no more than 10 percent of their income on car costs. This means you should make 120K to afford the average cost. Median *household* income in the US is $77K. The math just doesn't work.

CA High Speed Rail will bring tremendous benefits to Southern California beyond the high-speed train. Once this EIR is complete, Metrolink could choose to implement these projects - and electrification - long before CAHSR reaches LA.

As we prepare to release our draft EIR/EIS for the Los Angeles to Anaheim section, we want to highlight how this section will improve transit for everybody in Southern California.

So like, is the manosphere just one giant slimepool of lead psychosis?

nearly all the plant-based products we tested had elevated lead levels: vegan powders had 9x as much lead as dairy and 2x as much as beef

though dairy-based powders had the lowest levels, half were still too contaminated for safe daily use

you may be asking: how could this be? well...

I'm leaving Strasbourg impressed by all the newly built and heavily used protected bikeways.
A city street lined with multistage buildings. The street has dark asphalt because it's newly paved. There's a big island in the street, dividing the near side wide bikeway from car lanes on the other side. A freshly painted crosswalk goes across all four lakes, bike and car.
