“You can win elections by tacking to the middle; lots of people have. But you can also win elections by staking a moral position and convincing people to agree with you. You can earn support by demonstrating what is important to you instead of just being determined to nod along with what you hear.”
But don’t worry, Matt Stoller recently wrote that America has woken up to oligarchy cause he just realized he was duped by faux conservative populism

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)
God dammit, Trump 2.0 is turning me into a conspiracy theorist lol. I guess “Fuck ICE” was too brash, and writing on more than just one bullet casing was too cumbersome.
Hours after a shooting of ICE detainees, the FBI says “early evidence” of messages on the rounds are “anti-ICE in nature.”

Here is a picture FBI Director Kash Patel just tweeted of “the unspent shell casings recovered…engraved with the phrase ANTI ICE.”

DHS itself has confirmed that the victims were detainees but Noem and Vance have already jumped to reframe the attack as anti-law enforcement violence.
Turns out per Jimmy Kimmel that it isn’t speculation at all

The fact that left-of-center folks see it as hypocrisy is itself a sign that they do not understand the contemporary right. From the basic Wilhoit-ian perspective of conservatism, there's no contradiction, no hypocrisy. Power *is* the principle.
When someone says one thing to gain power and then a contradictory thing when exercising that power, the most useful lens for understanding it is power, not hypocrisy.
“Political violence isn’t okay” except when it’s state sponsored.

New, from me:
It was a terrible week, one that inspired some truly awful takes. The worst was the effort by Bari Weiss and The Free Press to smear universities as "the biggest culprits" to blame American political violence, with faculty training "jihadis."

The right wing disinformation engine is hitting the rev-limiter and shows no signs of abating.
Elon, fresh off attempting to incite race riots in England is now trying to incite pogroms against trans people.
It’s also farcical to think a Democratic president would use this as a weapon against any ostensibly conservative or right-wing groups/individuals and not just continue to use it against immigrants they similarly don’t like.
The bill is indeed bonkers and has deeply alarming implications. The idea that it could be used by a future Democratic administration is silly though - this Supreme Court will 100% allow it for Trump and declare it unconstitutional the moment a Democratic president tried to use it.
I spoke to @theintercept.com about a bonkers bill that would let Marco Rubio, who thinks pro-Palestine op-ed writers are terrorists, revoke passports for whoever he deems a supporter of terrorism.

It would also let a future Democratic administration target those it dislikes the same way.
The reactionary response to “Political Violence” like Charlie Kirk’s murder will ALWAYS be concentrated at the already weak, powerless, and generally left leaning targets.
The irony of these “free speech” committees is that these will lead to something that the legislature has tried but failed to do for the past two sessions:

A statewide bounty system where students, or anyone for that matter, can report profs to the state who teach things they don’t like.
The committees were made to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk and come as university faculty have come under online scrutiny.

Last September Charlie Kirk claimed that Haitian immigrants in Huntsville were "raping your women and hunting you down at night." He said that rural Alabamians faced a future in which Haitian immigrants "will become your masters." www.mediamatters.org/charlie-kirk...

This is just speculation but it makes you wonder how much the threat of state retribution contributes to the firings around Charlie Kirk (Matthew Dowd, numerous professors) and something like this.

Please read this. “Less than one week into President Donald Trump’s surge of deportation arrests in Chicago, an immigration agent shot and killed a man during a traffic stop on a near suburban street Friday morning.”
What happened to Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez
Immigration agents shot and killed an unarmed 38-year-old father outside Chicago on Friday—and their initial narrative of events was quickly disproven by videos captured by witnesses.

it really is astonishing how quickly it goes from “civil war” and “blood in the streets” to “wow guys it’s just a sad tragedy” when it becomes inconvenient

Trump's declaration that radical right extremism is justified as a response to the left will likely be heard all over the far right as a clear invitation to violence.

“That statement is basically a permission slip," one tracker of right wing extremism tells me.
