I'm stepping on the theme of Chris' book here but, we have an extremely toxic information environment controlled by wealthy oligarchs who have aligned themselves with Trump, the whole point is to manipulate people into making poor decisions. bsky.app/profile/chri...

People’s reactions to these stories tend to be of the leopards-eating-faces variety but this is a great piece of reporting in part about how voters very disconnected from politics make their choices.

Terminated fed? Plan to run for local and state offices and especially for US Congress
https://ballotpedia.org/
Filing_requirements_for_congressional_candidates
During the 2002-2012 period, while a housewife, 1 conducted consumer advocacy and civil rights work that captured media attention. On several occasions I was asked to consider running for statewide office.
A divorce in 2013 stymied that possibility and, instead, I returned to the workforce and ultimately became a federal employee. Since 2017, I've often said that if I won the lottery I would immediately resign from my fed position and announce my candidacy for US HofR.
The lottery hasn't happened, but Nov 2024 did. And now the diabolical purges. If you've already been terminated (for which I feel tremendous empathy for you and believe you can articulate your plan for a better tomorrow and hopeful future, please consider running for office. Unseating current Republicans in local, state and federal offices is imperative not only for your family's, community's, and state's sakes but also for the future of democracy in America. 1984 is here and you're currently free to run for office. This could be your new public service, and I know you would follow your oath to the Constitution unlike the supine Republicans in Congress.
Forward we must go. Stay strong. You matter.
EDITED TO SAY: Thank you to posters who are providing links and/or names of groups who might in some way assist those seeking political office.

I'm a woman who was denied having a baby safely by republicans. Whose career as a subject matter expert attorney dedicated to serving the American people was destroyed by republicans.
Whose first time home buying dream was taken away overnight by republicans.
Let's. Fuckin'. Go.
Edit: Thanks for the Reddit cares, you misanthropic fucks. Sorry your wives stopped sleeping with you.

Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania has indirect rate of 70%, but they probably didn’t want to list that atop Harvard because defunding a children’s hospital might be perceived as problematic.

This is devastating
davidho.bsky.social
These overhead rates are negotiated. Lowering it unilaterally to 15% is another way to destroy science in the US. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Tweet from NIH:

Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as "indirect costs." Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60%+ that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.

If you're an NSF PI like me, you might be wondering: Will my grant be suspended or terminated next week?

A few key things to know: First off, remember that NSF is **congressionally mandated** to evaluate broader impacts. And laws like CHIPS and Science supersede EOs.

But also... 🧵 thread

The Constitution and law SUPERSEDES exec orders!

Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.

It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.
