In the 4 playoff games John Schneider has managed the Blue Jays against the Mariners between 2022 and 2025, he's pulled his starter mid-inning each time.

The numbers from the relievers to complete those half innings:

9 TBF, 2 wild pitches, 2 home runs, 4 hits, and 8(!!!) runs allowed.

If the Mariners secure the victory, it will be a mop's worth of victories in a row in the playoffs in Toronto's stadium, and I think that's beautiful. That thought alone can easily carry me through the off day until the series comes back to T-Mobile Park.

If there was ever a night for the Mariners to get a "lucky" pitching performance, it was last night. Tremendous work.

A table showing wOBA vs xwOBA for team pitching performances in the 2025 postseason. The Mariners pitchers allowed a .317 xwOBA last night; they allowed a .156 true wOBA. That -.161 difference is the largest in the postseason this year, and one of the 10 largest differences in the postseason since 2016.

I feel like this looks quite prescient. Mariners pitchers attacked the zone, Blue Jays were super aggressive, contact was OK but not great and everything found a glove. Could not have drawn up a better night for the staff.

Normally I manage to maintain neutrality in my expectations about baseball outcomes, but I'm feeling strangely confident in the Seattle Mariners being able to handle the Blue Jays, especially if they win today's game. I'm choosing to embrace playoff hype over playoff gripe.
