Also popularity only matters if voting matters, which it won't by the time Trump gerrymandering efforts and Roberts Voting Rights gutting are done.
ghawinriver.bsky.social
None of them, because none of their voters would believe their polices are what is hurting them. If accountability for bad politics and worse product was a thing that mattered, we would not be here.

When I was in 11th grade I took AP history with a man who looked like Santa but who quietly assigned us firsthand accounts of historical atrocities, ostensibly to teach us about primary sources. Anyway the worst thing I read by a long shot was an account of Columbus meeting the Taíno.

After decades of a do-nothing grandstanding congress, Trump says "screw the rules, I make them," and hands them policy meat GOP-led legislatures have been edging them with for 20 years?
ghawinriver.bsky.social
Honestly, I'm not sure it's that they haven't noticed. I think it's that they either don't care, or actively want this. I mean, wasn't this the core appeal of Trump to his voters?
ghawinriver.bsky.social
Simple: because he's not saying he should own a journalism and news outlet! This is very simple! It's not that difficult to understand saying that maybe it's a bad idea to do that. It'd be like putting me in charge of AT&T!

Was waiting to see how Olivia Reingold (who Oliver's piece destroyed almost as much as Bari Weiss) would respond, and you can see the tweet below which also shows she either did not watch his piece, or just didn't understand it, since he actually addresses this point directly.
Olivia Reingold quote tweeting Variety.

The Variety tweet is about John Oliver's piece on Bari Weiss leading CBS News, saying:

John Oliver slams Bari Weiss' takeover of CBS News:

"I wouldn’t want anyone who led a pure opinion outlet, not even one that I happened to agree with, to suddenly be running CBS News. But it is especially alarming to have someone doing it who has spent years putting out work that, in my opinion, is at best irresponsible and at worst deeply misleading."

Reingold then quotes it saying:

Why does this sound like John Oliver commenting on……John Oliver

This right here isn't even isolated to COVID. Contrarian, "heterodox" media relies upon the same techniques regardless of the subject matter. Be it vaccines, trans kids, sexual harassment, it's all the same game, with the same harms.

Here is some material Bari Weiss published regarding Covid.

So when anyone defends her in any way, what they are saying is that real world victims of medical disinformation don’t matter.

Updated this piece to reflect that this guy now says he has $5 million from venture capital funds to start the “The Anti-Fraud Company” which will allow Shieh to scale up his model of AI-aided harassment and apply it to the federal government.

yeah man, trans reporters, whom the ny times derogatorily calls "trans activists" so that normies won't listen to them, have been reporting on ADF activity in the UK since 2018.

bigotry in journalism makes you late to the story.

Really important NYT investigation finds that the ADF has been working with Reform, 'courting the party since at least 2024' and that the British arm 'orchestrated Mr Farage’s appearance in Congress, reaching out to ask if he would like to give evidence on censorship'

We'll have to make sure we don't end up right back here, because clearly we learned nothing from the last time fascism reared its head.
ghawinriver.bsky.social
I mean I get it. I really do; it's important that people care NOW, even a little. But I still think it also needs to be pointed out that if our would-be allies had gotten with the program when they still had a chance to actually save us, we would not be here. Because if and when that day does come?
ghawinriver.bsky.social
Also the least he could've done is cite @assignedmedia.org or even my own local op-eds on this topic because dude's writers clearly read the blasted material because where the hell else were they gonna get it from?
ghawinriver.bsky.social
If this story on Weiss had come out in 2023, or 2018, when she began her hagiography of the Intellectual Dark Web, we would not be here. Why do media figures with large audiences only care when it's far, far too late? That's a recurring problem. I can't take any joy in this even if it is deserved.
ghawinriver.bsky.social
Like yeah, it's great that Oliver and co. bust Weiss and The Free Press for being a glorified substack pandering to rich contrarians and for outright fabrication regarding Jamie Reed's accounts, but funny story, trans journalists and misinformation experts did that work years ago.
ghawinriver.bsky.social
One thing I always feel when I see pieces like this is mourning and frustration, not righteous catharsis.

Most of what's in here could have been done on as big a platform with as big an audience as this 3 years ago, if not 5 years ago, when it still actually mattered and wasn't too late.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

New article out this month on how doctors become fascists.

50% of German physicians joined the Nazi Party––twice the proportion of any other profession. US doctors today are arguably the most conservative in the world, and we're heading along a similar path.

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy
