It's as if being personally and emotionally close to the target of one's appropriation/oppression excuses the act - perhaps the feeling of justification emerges from the vulnerability required by such intimacy with the subject of appropriation, but this is a fantasy (to borrow from bell hooks)

For example, when Paul Simon describes his appropriation of the harmonic tropes of Gospel music when writing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in a 1970 appearance on the Dick Cavett show, he emphasizes how much he was listening to the group The Swan Silvertones ("that was the music that was in my mind")

Indeed, I think that can be said about a lot of their music - it's particularly interesting to me in this case because the vocal performance is so close to rapping without seeming to intentionally/exploitatively trade on rapping (at least that's my interpretation)

I've been thinking alot this semester about, and working with my 'Race in US Popular Music' students to explore, the way personal intimacy is used by members of dominant groups (i.e. white people) to absolve themselves when they reproduce oppression, even/especially when their actions are blatant
