DJ Durkin may be responsible for the death of one of the players he was supposed to protect, but if you're trying to build a football program, how can you overlook a man responsible for Zero winning seasons as a head coach

Composer Ted Hearne and the choral group The Crossing turn colonial documents and corporate tweets into techno-pop oratorio, drawing a line from William Penn's land grabs to Jeff Bezos's gig economy. George Grella digs into this fascinating project.

"Jimmy Cliff reached 81, but the character he played in The Harder They Come never got that far. Ivan’s story burned fast. Cliff, who died Monday, carried the music further."

How Jimmy Cliff and ‘The Harder They Come’ Turned a Film Into a Movement:
How Jimmy Cliff and ‘The Harder They Come’ Turned a Film Into a Movement | In Sheeps Clothing
Cliff’s breakout performance helped ignite global attention, yet it was the full soundtrack — Toots and the Maytals, The Melodians, The Slickers, Dekker — that turned one movie into a cultural shift. Jimmy Cliff reached 81, but the character he played in The Harder They Come never got that far. Ivan’s story burned fast. Cliff, who died Monday, carried the music further. And one of the strongest vehicles for that le...

This is interesting in so many ways - my first thought is how tech leaders demonstrate this 'singular' approach to things

My second is how proud I am that my non-major composition students were vulnerable in W24

It is difficult to induce that at all and harder to replicate across populations
i mentor young musicmakers & writers and can confirm that many of them don't want to surrender to another person's world, especially if it's from >5 years ago. it's as if they don't want to find common ground with other artists. they see their own work as singular, and end up reinventing the wheel

Reminder: you don't have to engage with AI as an instructor. You can talk about AI--even build AI literacy, if you want to call it that--and still not engage directly with a brutal, unethical, ecologically disastrous bundle of technologies. Regardless of institutional pressure, you can refuse.

A thought pertaining to college discourse on this app:

When we analyze students, teaching, and research in 2025 we must acknowledge an actively hostile social, political, and economic context

Our leaders constantly demonstrate their contempt for universities, their workers, and their students

I definitely experience what this person describes with a handful of students every semester, I'm lucky that every class of mine does not exhibit this issue and, in my experience, it's more common with athletes than non-athletes
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
