your excitement is a wind beneath my winds, friend

save it for when I actually learn how to do what I have in mind, I've stopped-and-started with MaxMSP many times over the last...seven??...years

I may finally become a 'real electronic musician' and learn how to use MaxMSP so I can make more dynamic, varied, and unpredictable MIDI sequencing setups for my synth improvisations

White people’s insistence that other white people—especially the ones exhibiting morally questionable behavior—deserve the benefit of the doubt is going to kill us all.

There was a thick mushroom and chestnut stew, warm sage and butternut bread, a deep dish of potato'n'onion'n'carrot bake, and a strawberry shortcake with meadowcream. After the meal, they sipped motherwort tea.

I'm not sure and their website doesn't give any backstory

Found an interesting price tag in the Meijer (Carpenter Rd.) beer aisle

I am a big fan of Great Lakes Brewing, but this is too pricy
Photo of a Meijer price tag that reads, "Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald 12PK BTL 999.99/Unit Price 6.94 Per oz 12 oz"

Friendly reminder that Tidal ($10.99) is now cheaper than Spotify ($11.99), delivers better audio quality, pays its artists 2x as much, and generally doesn't allow AI slop.

You can move your entire music library over in a matter of minutes.

It's as if being personally and emotionally close to the target of one's appropriation/oppression excuses the act - perhaps the feeling of justification emerges from the vulnerability required by such intimacy with the subject of appropriation, but this is a fantasy (to borrow from bell hooks)
garrt.bsky.social
For example, when Paul Simon describes his appropriation of the harmonic tropes of Gospel music when writing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in a 1970 appearance on the Dick Cavett show, he emphasizes how much he was listening to the group The Swan Silvertones ("that was the music that was in my mind")

Indeed, I think that can be said about a lot of their music - it's particularly interesting to me in this case because the vocal performance is so close to rapping without seeming to intentionally/exploitatively trade on rapping (at least that's my interpretation)

I've been thinking alot this semester about, and working with my 'Race in US Popular Music' students to explore, the way personal intimacy is used by members of dominant groups (i.e. white people) to absolve themselves when they reproduce oppression, even/especially when their actions are blatant

“young republicans weren’t like this when I was a young republican” is lowkey incredible posting

the synthesizer part that comes in about 2/3 into this song sounds to me like it is meant to evoke a classic hip hop synth lead

in '06, during my first year orientation at Rice, there was a white student would was vocally upset that members of the Black Student Association got to lead a large discussion during 'diversity day' and she almost derailed the whole exercise (I'm not sure if she was a republican)

I don’t know how to approach “Republicans weren’t racist in the early aughts” as someone who went to Texas during the early aughts and had to debate whether or not Black students were “stealing” people’s spots in class.

I have a slight cold that I picked up from the kids, and there is just enough postnasal drainage that my night's sleep last night got totally wrecked with coughing
