Howdy, y’all.

I’m a tenured prof who studies storytelling outside the rules of mass media. This has included never-published manuscripts from during the age of print (1750-1900) & of late has made me a leader in the study of #TTRPG Actual Play.

I’ve learned a lot about friendship along the way.

HEY! On Thursday (10/16) I am giving a talk at Auburn about how we depict and talk about worlds in tabletop and miniature games. It's about granularity and how fiddly we get about the worlds we make. It's at 4pm and it's free and the info can be found at this link cla.auburn.edu/cah/events/?...

I am so very very excited to have Cameron driving across the border with his students for what I hope is the first of many such exchanges down here.

The precursor of the Presidential Medal of Freedom was the Congressional Medal of Freedom, which was established in 1945 to honor civilians who aided the fight against fascism in WWII.
from wikipedia, a bronze medal with an image of Columbia crowned with stars and an eagle headdress over the word Freedom, with a red ribbon and a bronze palm.

And yet I keep mulling over what it would be to have a DM learning a system on mic. I don’t even know how you’d pull off that trick. Maybe it’s impossible.

I find myself thinking a lot about authority versus hosting/facilitating — there’s overlap, of course, but can a group learn together?

Instead, it’s QS as teacher (Sage on the stage, with the occasional fruitful glimpse at his exasperation), with two bright students with exceptional trust (& healthy lack of deference). It’s real & yet constructed — as any class is, really.

I’ve been talking to KG about the role of the GM, especially in PTFO, which began from a pedagogical brief. What strikes me as I try to define what pedagogical AP is these days is that what I thought from Q’s original pitch — that we’d see HIM learn, as audience avatar, couldn’t actually happen… 1/?

So, for me, more useful and interesting than most traditional actual plays. More dramatic actual plays will tell me a story. More factual ones will show you how any given game is done. This isn't either. You want to know what it's like to enter the world of Jorume or Nobilis? These are audioportals.

Up to date with this, and am really enjoying it - I find myself thinking what Quinns is doing with these heavy games is doing what most these games don't - follow the old screenwriting adage of Turning Exposition Into Ammunition. As such, it's both an intro to the players AND the audience.

The new season of my actual play show where we play old rpgs from history BEGINS!

Here at the start of the season I mostly hold it together as the GM. Later, you can practically hear the steam coming out of my ears. Podcast links are in the video description!

They're trying to prevent the student newspaper from printing news, period. Not just a particular story.

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

Based on these prints I found after last night’s open hours @skeuomorphpress.org, I’d say things are happening in the cornfields of central Illinois
Two posters, one on orange paper and one on yellow, reading “LUDDITE SOCIETY” in large wood type. underneath the letters is an illustration of a flame printed from a linocut

Everyone, the days of NOT CREDITING photojournalists and video journalists are OVER. You MUST CREDIT photographers and videographers who are risking bodies and lives.

Also very important, we can't verify without knowing sources.

No one is being singled out. But from now on, you will be CALLED OUT.

The @chicago.suntimes.com photographer who risked their personal health and safety to take this photograph is Anthony Vazquez. Please credit photographers and media outlets. In this age of misinformation, a photo with no context could be anything at all.

On Sunday, I visited DEAR NEW YORK, Brandon Stanton's "love letter" to the city he's been documenting for years as "Humans of New York" for their family reception with student artists.

It's a gorgeous exhibit that's transformed Grand Central Station. See it before 10/19!

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Today’s class on LITTLE WARS became an object lesson in reading against the grain, the ways canon-formation works in all kinds of institutional ways, shaping even the names of streets (the first literary canon that ever taught me)
