Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

En Finlandia, a diferencia de Alemania, el Estado llevaba tiempo preparándose. Con una frontera con Rusia de 1.300 kilómetros, la necesidad de financiación de la defensa era más evidente. Desde la entrada en la OTAN, en abril de 2023, el país nórdico ha debido hacer graves sacrificios. El actual Gobierno, formado por cuatro partidos, ha amasado un amplio consenso para aplicar las difíciles reformas. Es otro cambio de régimen: Finlandia, el icono del Estado de bienestar, lo ha desmontado desde el inicio de la invasión rusa de Ucrania, para adaptar su economía a tiempos de guerra.
Desempleados, estudiantes y beneficiarios de prestaciones básicas reciben ya menos dinero, los inmigrantes tienen que demostrar su integración para recibir ayudas y la mayoría de los finlandeses han de poner de su bolsillo para ir al médico. Después de solo dos meses en el paro, los afectados pierden el 20% de la prestación. Después de ocho meses, los pagos mensuales se reducen en otros cinco puntos porcentuales. Las ayudas de entre 130 y 240 euros mensuales, en función del número de hijos, han sido eliminadas por completo.
Los recortes son particularmente duros para la versión finlandesa del subsidio de vivienda, que reciben los hogares con bajos ingresos y los estudiantes. El subsidio del alquiler se redujo en más de un 12% y los propietarios ya no reciben apoyo financiero. La autoridad de bienestar social KELA se limita a instruir a los afectados para que busquen un nuevo apartamento más barato.
El Gobierno presentará esta primavera una reforma de la renta básica. Se facilita el despido y las empresas pueden ahora desviarse de los salarios colectivos en varios sectores. Se relajan las reglas para los contratos de trabajo de duración determinada. Así es como Helsinki libera recursos para construir barreras físicas en 200 kilómetros de los tramos más vulnerables de su frontera. Abstract: Candidacy rights and voting rights are not always congruent. Although voting rights are extensively studied, historical and contemporary incongruencies in suffrage have been widely overlooked. We propose a typology of suffrage incongruency that we apply to the enfranchisement of non-citizen residents and non-resident citizens—two categories recently at the center of enfranchisement scholarship and reform efforts. Using an original dataset that covers 165 countries and 61 years (1960-2020), we identify past and present voting-only incongruencies and candidacy-only incongruencies. Existing theories of suffrage extension focus on the voteshare maximizing logic of incumbents. However, these explanations cannot account for why only one part of suffrage is extended. With two exploratory case studies of Switzerland and the United Kingdom, we inductively arrive at potential explanations for why voting-only and candidacy-only incongruencies arise and resolve in democracies. We conclude with a research agenda on the causes and consequences of suffrage incongruencies.
