Happy WICKED Wednesday!It was *thrillifying* to be hired to design the covers of the official MAKING OF WICKED movie books early this year but the project was unfortunately ❌CANCELLED. However, I wanted to share them now to partake in the excitement for WICKED: FOR GOOD!Since *swankified* over-the-top printing specs are my thing, I designed them using a few bold Pantones on textured Rainbow paper with a foil stamp (of course!) and blind debossing to set off some shapes. As is always my challenge when working with licensed properties with inherited assets and guides that have been everywhere and on literally everything, I tried to pull only what was necessary and branch out so it’s still official-looking, but with a specific intention. To emphasize the books’ uniqueness, focusing on the “making of,” and the movies’ deliberate references to so much of the original Technicolor OZ film, I thought it could be neat to illustrate magical filmstrips swirling around abstract film reels within the shape of the iconic, very recognizable Grimmerie book prop from WICKED, and also using the runes from specific spells that figure in each film.Elphaba is always represented with harsh edges and angles, and Glinda with bubbles, circles and florals, so I thought it also made sense to incorporate that into the shapes and decorations for each cover so the books are especially distinct from one another.I’m *despondiary* that these will never see the light of day but it was a dream to be asked to design them as an *obsessulated* fan of WICKED and all-things OZ.Thank OZ for @wickedmovie @universalpictures @jonmchu @cynthiaerivo @arianagrande @fayedunaway @jbayleaf 👏 #WickedMovie #ForGood ​​#Wicked #WickedForGood #WizardOfOz #bookdesign
