Re: every headline involving education
A 4 panel comic.

Panel 1: closeup of a new textbook on a kid's school desk. The cover reads "World Histeries - sponcored bye PragerU + OpenAI"

Panel 2: The kid opens the book. Page titles include "How slavery boosted the enconemy" and "12 reasons hitler wasn't wrong" along with an ad that reads "more with a pragerU subscription and another that says "10% off openAI" with a QR code.

Panel 3: the kid looks up at the teacher, lifts the book, and says "what the fuck is this"

Panel 4: an exhausted teacher, still passing out a stack of the books, replies "your senator picked it"

Long story short, an actual Nazi doxxing ring. Enough people reported them that they went away for like 12 hours and then Elon personally brought them back. The site is dead. If you’re still on there, go lock your account right now

This was bad. The directing absolutely thinks this movie is smarter than it is, and the elements don't work well when they finally coalesce together. Performances were fine. I feel like this should've learned lessons from Psycho and Silence of the Lambs about the portrayal of the villain.
toby.nookpup.gay
14/31 "Longlegs"
3.5⭐
A satanic serial killer vs. an FBI agent putting together the clues and hunting him down.
- Wants to be the new "Silence of the Lambs" but it ain't
- Has many good directorial choices and great framing/screenwork
- Nic Cage is...fine
- Didn't like the intro of supernatural shit
enlil.bsky.social
This movie coasts on the puppetry alone. I'm down with the dumb outerspace nonsense and the hilariously bad song within a movie (that got stuck in my head as a kid), but dicking around for 45 minutes before the movie really starts with characters who don't have arcs anyway is a waste of time, lmao
toby.nookpup.gay
13/31 "Critters"
3.5⭐
They're hungry fuzzballs from space, and they land on a small town farm.
- Kitschy
- Silly
- I didn't care for the cast, they really didn't sell it
- Overall I can only look at it as a thing of it's time, tryna cash in on the evil 80s puppet monster schtick
- Not cute enough

This movie exists to critically re-assess Fred Durst, and I think it's nice to rethink cultural punching bags. But "I Saw the TV Glow" is a better Durst film by a long shot. This movie was a snooze and had no real surprises.
toby.nookpup.gay
12/31 "Y2K"
2.5⭐
Teens attempt to survive and end the Y2K machine uprising
- This has been done, but not live action CGI
- this was like a kids cartoon but with some gore
- HEY MILLENNIALS, REMEMBER THE THING?
- YOU LIKE THINGS FROM CHILDHOOD YES?
- Dumb, but not charmingly dumb
- Fred Durst. No.

I really expected this to be some sort of Battle Royale or Danganronpa but it was just an isolated ski lodge story with weird character motivations and pretty low levels of pressure from the main source of threat. The dog was adorable though.
toby.nookpup.gay
11/31 "Wolf's Hole"
2⭐
A youth skiing trip in the czech mountains turns dark as the leaders turn the kids on each other and make a sacrifice
- Very little actual horror, mostly dread and isolation
- The plot was held together by very thin connective tissue
- More questions than answers in the end
enlil.bsky.social
This movie whips. Fantastic performances all around. Big recommend.
toby.nookpup.gay
10/31 "The Substance"
4.5⭐
A former star takes a drug that gives her a new perfect self to regain her fame, but the old self is the lifesource
- Wow
- Holy crap the effects, the body horror...PEAK
- the framing
- the sets
- the pallette
- just watch it
- I gotta reevaluate the director's first movie
enlil.bsky.social
This may have codified some elements of Dracula in cinema as well as been the first color Dracula film, but it whiffs the story pretty hard. Dracula doesn't have the poisonous presence he normally does, and a complete lack of accent work makes him just feel like a British aristocrat.
toby.nookpup.gay
9/31 "Horror of Dracula"
2⭐
The Dracula story again, with some modifications
- I literally can't tell the difference between all these white men that talk and look the exact same
- Christopher Lee doesn't save how boring it is
- I'd never seen a Hammer Picture before, don't really want to again
enlil.bsky.social
Goofy follow up to a stronger sequel. The commentary on the exploitative nature of the film industry is still relevant.
toby.nookpup.gay
8/31 "Scream 3"
2.5⭐
Another Ghostface appears, killing the cast of "Stab 3" to lure out Sid once more.
- Wow, clearly not a strongly written as the first 2
- Ridiculous twists I didn't care about
- The most meta "Scream" yet, but also the most formulaic
- Wooden performances
- I hope 4 is ok

We cannot protect these people from themselves and we cannot protect ourselves FROM THEM when their scam candidates win elections. Becoming a social pariah for believing this bullshit may be the best we can do.
enlil.bsky.social
These people are also the easiest marks for scams, and our media outlets are incentivized to promote these ideas because scams (in the short run) make lots of money. It's a feedback loop we can't seem to terminate, which is terrifying since these ideas can't be shaken even when proven false.

When we write or draw porn or erotica, we get banned from having a bank account and our livelihoods get seized even if we give it away for free.

When billionaires steal what we've written or drawn to churn out a slop-approximate of porn, they're allowed to charge for it.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

LRT:

Whatever Scientific American is doing is clearly bought off by LLM peddlers. Everything in the headline is deeply out of touch culturally and also legally. It's inexplicable, like someone fed an LLM pop media and asked it what people want to see. Space alien intuition for what's cool.

The episode they gave him in s1 was so interesting and I thought the show would go somewhere with writing like that, but no. It was a one-off episode of good writing.
