This may just be the best CS paper I’ve read this year. Just read the abstract and first para of the intro! The rest of the intro is really wild too, but very very good:

A screenshot of an academic paper. It reads:

Abstract
A "
'quine" is a deterministic program that prints itself. In this essay, I will show you a "gauguine": a probabilistic program that infers itself. A gauguine is repeatedly asked to guess its own source code. Initially, its chances of guessing correctly are of course minuscule. But as the gauguine observes more and more of its own previous guesses, it detects patterns of behavior and gains information about its inner workings.
This information allows it to bootstrap self-knowledge, and ultimately discover its own source code. We will discuss how-and why-we might write a gauguine, and what we stand to learn by constructing one.
CCS Concepts: • Computing methodologies → Philo-sophical/theoretical foundations of artificial intelli-gence; Theory of mind.

1 A Way of Knowing

From time to time, we all have crises of identity-moments of radical and overwhelming uncertainty about our selves.
I' don't know whether the doubts that seize us can really be externalized in language, but if I were to try, I would express them as questions, questions like: Who am I? What am I?
What kind of person? What kind of mind?

How it started:
"Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return." (Introducing OpenAI blog post, 2015)

How it's going:

Literally better internationalists than the fucking tankie-ass motherfuckers you constantly gotta deal with on the Left.
elisennesh.bsky.social
No, because it's hard to find people not bound by breed restrictions able to adopt them.
elisennesh.bsky.social
That's a concern for the breeders though, isn't it? Not the people adopting and spay/neutering their pets.

they have been trying to do meme authoritarianism, and that means generating the right kinds of content--the forces of Order vs the forces of Chaos, riots and violence and burning shit and ""antifa supersoldiers""

the kind of imagery to justify the kind of powers they aspire to

And I do value my job. I feel very lucky to work as a Professor in a topic I love. I don't even mind a lot of the admin (I actually really enjoy writing grants!), but I just think that the reality is very far from what most people deciding to enter the field expect. Certainly I had no idea.

Schatz: They’re stopping wind and solar because this guy has some very strange ideas about the energy mix. And it’s consistent with the rest of his political and economic philosophy — if there’s less of everything, it gives him more authority to dole out favors

Sure but it would be the first time he's been honest with himself or anyone else about his moral character and that in itself is symptomatic.

Or more simply: they're using violence as a tantrum, in the instinctive belief that if they tantrum hard enough they'll get what they want.

This is a recipe for horror, of course, but also for their own overthrow.
danskubi.bsky.social
The right has no compunctions about using violence but they also feel no need to construct a mechanical theory of how their violence will produce political change. Their killings are more like ritual magic than anything else. The highest goal is just to produce a satisfying spectacle.

I can’t help but think MIT‘s response to The Compact was swift because it’s so sincere. Though every institution has sore spots, it’s easily the closest thing to meritocracy I’ve ever seen up close. Tough — sometimes brutal — but fair.

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

"Ma'am, the Nazi gumbo meme has breached containment and..."

"I've heard enough. Load the torpedoes, set phasers to kill, and burn the planet. No survivors."

"Aye, captain."
