If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
ebthen.bsky.social
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)
ebthen.bsky.social
Or by twisting the language. Not even mocking it. Just twisting it to mean whatever you want it to mean and taking its utility away from the people for whom it had real benefit.
ebthen.bsky.social
I mean a lot of the problem is that the anti-TW/CW/CN folks for the most part (especially the white guys) just didn't like the idea that they could be expected to think about the impact their behavior could have on others.

That was the main thing but they couched it in a lot of concern trolling.
ebthen.bsky.social
I mean that's honestly a terrible and nonspecific version of a content notice but even so yes it has annoyed me, too.

Like, TV ratings exist. Movie ratings exist. People sort of gripe about them but no one was really like "this is going to make people too soft to live in the world".
ebthen.bsky.social
"Content notice" is very bland language. Not evocative at all. It doesn't anticipate what the audience's response is going to be to whatever it is that's coming up.

And it doesn't imply it can catch folks' triggers.
ebthen.bsky.social
Like, that's not realistic. Or sense. Or practical to be done.

And it doesn't really get at the point of the tool anyway.

I like the language of "content notice". It's just making a note of a part of the content people might want to be able to give informed consent before interacting with it.
ebthen.bsky.social
The thing is, this is why I prefer not to use the language of "trigger warning". Because, as I've said, triggers are really specific to the individual. I don't expect someone else to think "oh someone falling off a roof and having major medical trauma is definitely going to be a thing to warn for."
ebthen.bsky.social
I still just can't do it.
ebthen.bsky.social
Testing myself and finding out that I still can't sit through medical stories with people falling off roofs.

Like... there are so many potential kinds of head trauma and my dad's accident was over five years ago and his death was nearly five years ago but.

You should be able to set up more than one language for your keyboard and have it automatically correct words but I'm not sure if that will do what you want with diacritics.

... I mean, he's right, but you would hope that some folks who think they're journalists would recognize the irony.

Tom Bowman has held his Pentagon press pass for 28 years. He says the Pentagon's new media policy makes it impossible to be a journalist, which means finding out what's really going on behind the scenes and not accepting wholesale what any government or administration says.

Mamdani transparently loves new york and new yorkers and has things he believes in. That seems replicable
dicknixon.bsky.social
Mamdani is going to win. The question will now be, "Can you reproduce this?" It's doubtful. He's talented. But it's possible, first of all, if you remember all politics is local, and the more local you get - the more people recognize you - the more things like age and parties cease to matter.

Honestly, so much of our struggles can be summed up this way, but we might make abled people ~uncomfortable~ and ~scared about the inevitable failure of their bodies~.

Yup, people will assume others are vaccinated, even though they've likely let their vaccines wane. Unfortunately the vaccines don't 100% stop transmission.
I keep masking because I know we didn't improve indoor air enough. We need better filtration and air replacement everywhere
ebthen.bsky.social
That's what "you can stop masking if you're vaccinated" was. It was permission for folks who think of themselves as "normal" to stop caring about not harming other people.

Watching the web world move on to AI when I can't even get teams to know when to use an aria-label or not or throw in a little more color contrast really just makes me want to melt into the earth. I know I complain about this stuff a lot, but it's pretty devastating to me.

Anyway. How we make values like "caring about how our actions affect other people and choosing to actively try not to harm other people" mainstream is by spreading them and making them seem obviously correct.

Regardless, caring about how your actions affect other people and making choices in line with that is about your values.

So, no, I don't think people developed "empathy burnout" as a result of 2020. I think people, especially in 2021 going forward, got permission to stop caring.

The entire concept of "empathy burnout" is why I think the way people talk about empathy is bullshit.

It's a model where people are allowed to opt out of doing the right thing because they don't feel the right things.

It's a model where everything is about vibes, not values.

Fun little reminder that before Bari Weiss was destroying a large media outlet, she was just a random blogger arguing for subminimum wage for disabled people. 😉
(This post is about listening to disabled people.)

Please help me get to the dentist today. They've estimated it'll be around $1200 (plus rideshare back.and forth).

I would really like to have a chance at making it, please? 💕💸
