Another month, another post, I guess I'll keep on reading books.

This is a busy-busy month so we shall see what happens!

💙📚 #BookSky
An image that says "Our October Reads" in weird creepy Halloween font the background is orange with spider webs in the top right and left corner. Then the bottom there is a little grassy hill with barren trees in all black with a couldron in the middle with bubbling purple liquid with a white skull.

There are three additional images from left to right starting with me in a lot of green and a baseball cap and I'm holding a little bin full of dice. Eddie Spaghetti is a little black cat in the middle slightly sticking out his tongue. Then there is Ayla a calico with her head imposed on Padme Amidala in her white outfit from Attack of the Clones.

I am so silly and just switched out On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous for my Name of the Rose reread.

I'm in the mood for labyrinths and horror!

I think I made a decision on Katabasis, Lapvona (which I forgot to add before), and On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous.

As much as I love Shadow of the Wind and look forward to a reread, I think two smaller books might be nice to accompany Katabsis.

Then as always I have this super tiny copy of Emma.

I'm so stressed my dysfunctional stomach is very unhappy with me.

I'm so intrigued by Piranesi but it seems rather confusing? Whenever I open it, it looks like it might have an unusual structure that I'm not sure if I'm ready to tackle yet.

I just know a lot of ppl have told me to read it because I loved Starless Sea so much.

I still haven't selected my books for my flight and am screaming.

Right now I'm really learning towards Katabasis, Shadow of the Wind, Piranesi, and On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous.

I'm planning on bringing 3 with me haha.

I'm def bringing Queer Ukraine which is so tiny.

I put Trollhunters on for some background noise and it was a mistake because I forgot how much I enjoyed this show and how much it makes me want to write a middle grade book.
earthkids.bsky.social
I should add this isn't as cool as you think it might be but still 🤞
earthkids.bsky.social
I did a cool and big thing today related to a publisher so here is 🤞

I started reading this one since it's shorter and the essay has me sad again that I had to drop out of the class over the summer about modern Russian politics.

It's a good thing I did because I dropped out for one reason then everything got so much worse.

This is the book about Ukraine I mentioned.

If you're ever in Philly, check out Woodenshoe on South because I'm always picking up interesting little reads there.

I always want more queer Slavic stories in my life.
Queer Ukraine an Anthology of LGBTQi+ Ukrainian Voices During Wartime Edited and Translated by the Dvijka Collective. The book cover features a white washed wall with a painted Moldova cocktail on it.

And deep down, I know I'll end up downloading all these essays about Tolstoy instead and be like oh wait no, oh shoot.
earthkids.bsky.social
I now regret lugging all of those books to work because I'm meeting up with Queer Lunch Club.

Now I have to sit here eyeing all my distractions while also trying to remember to download some critical essays to read on my phone about Orlando.
earthkids.bsky.social
Haha I will read it and be like ah yes this is one half of my department 😅

I mean there is a choice of being a problematic character vs going out of your way to use inaccurate racist terms for a time period. 🤷

I'm hesitant about Kuang. I loved all her other books but Babel. It's a topic I read too much academia on & it didn't have the character depth I like in fiction.

This Indigenous Peoples Day please speak up: another typhoon sweeping away homes of Alaska's Natives, who, during settlement (statehood: 1948) were forced to end ways of life (like my Grandma's) involving mobility across regions & stuck them in flood-prone/unstable villages with housing deficits.

I panicked about books & threw so many into my bag for my lunch break.

Still have Orlando by Virginia Woolf

But now also:
Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh
Katabasis by R.F Kuang

And this collection of queer stories from Ukraine I bought to support queer communities there from one of my fav bookstore.

I am seeing a lot of people reposting Lakota Man today bc it's Indigenous Peoples Day. A reminder that he is not well liked amongst many (most?) Natives on social media. Many of us blocked him a long time ago. Some of the reasons why are in this article.

www.dailydot.com/irl/lakotama...
Who is LakotaMan, the user behind one of the most popular Native American accounts on X?
John Martin is adored by white X users—but infamous among Native and Indigenous communities.

I also still need to figure out what physical books to bring in my trip which is a very odd stressor for me.

I saw some interesting essays discussing her colonial view on gender fluidity and am hoping to download some from the library.

It'll all help with me annotating my book, too. The prose felt dense w/ little important details I wanted to highlight throughout to remember for later as it comes together

She def made sure to use some language and slurs that were pretty historically inaccurate for the time period she was writing about.
earthkids.bsky.social
Time to figure out what audiobooks I want to download for my trip.

I'm a few hours into Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq, which I can't imagine any other way. It's incredible but very heavy and also very short so I'll need a few more downloaded.

Reading Miss Majors Speaks was an incredibly moving experience last year. I can't recommend this book enough for those unfamiliar with her work.

Rest in peace 🖤

That was why I picked up Orlando! I heard so many ppl talk about how great it is with its depiction of gender fluidity and am also intrigued to how adding fantastical things helped get it past censors but the racism is really making me stop and focus on some criticisms/analysis.
earthkids.bsky.social
I'm hoping to read some critiques and more then start reading again. Though I have a bad habit of starting something then picking it up a year later so we shall see

I was casually annotating it already too
