Soooo I'm holding myself accountable and I binge drank today.

Technically I did Sunday but due to circumstances of going out with friend and being happy, I let it slide.

Today similar scenario of being positive but I still drank 3 margaritas and 5 beers.

Need to do better by less.

I started reading this one since it's shorter and the essay has me sad again that I had to drop out of the class over the summer about modern Russian politics.

It's a good thing I did because I dropped out for one reason then everything got so much worse.

Now I have to sit here eyeing all my distractions while also trying to remember to download some critical essays to read on my phone about Orlando.

I mean there is a choice of being a problematic character vs going out of your way to use inaccurate racist terms for a time period. 🤷

I'm hesitant about Kuang. I loved all her other books but Babel. It's a topic I read too much academia on & it didn't have the character depth I like in fiction.

I am seeing a lot of people reposting Lakota Man today bc it's Indigenous Peoples Day. A reminder that he is not well liked amongst many (most?) Natives on social media. Many of us blocked him a long time ago. Some of the reasons why are in this article.

I saw some interesting essays discussing her colonial view on gender fluidity and am hoping to download some from the library.

It'll all help with me annotating my book, too. The prose felt dense w/ little important details I wanted to highlight throughout to remember for later as it comes together

Time to figure out what audiobooks I want to download for my trip.

I'm a few hours into Split Tooth by Tanya Tagaq, which I can't imagine any other way. It's incredible but very heavy and also very short so I'll need a few more downloaded.

That was why I picked up Orlando! I heard so many ppl talk about how great it is with its depiction of gender fluidity and am also intrigued to how adding fantastical things helped get it past censors but the racism is really making me stop and focus on some criticisms/analysis.

Yeah, I felt like also the jarring effect is the fact she has to slip in slurs that wouldn't be accurate to the time. I'd feel the same way about a modern text when it comes to language.

It took me several tries to start it and I was like how lenient do I frame this scene. And then after I was whisked away then hit another moment and was like this is very distracting. A whole different kind of classic novel is gonna remind you of how racist it is.

I hit a moment where I was like wow slow down, the use of this language is anachronistic to the time period reflected. And I get the obsession of time + how it's rooted/unrooted throughout which is interesting but I was like wow boy we are gonna have to dig into some critiques before moving on.

The racism and Orientalism in the text. Though I found some interesting articles I might see if I can get through the library about the portrayal of colonialism and gender throughout her work. Like even some of the language used is for my rooted in her present but not Orlando's.

It's more the racism and Orientalism
that made me go I need to stop for a moment and read more about her vs. her writing style, which I've been enjoying very much.
