Media "fact-checks" have ALWAYS been poor, going back to egomaniac Bill Adair insisting the Ryan plan didn't abolish Medicare (it did).
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
Thinking fondly of all the pre-election fact-checks that said we couldn’t possibly know whether Republicans wanted to get rid of pre-existing condition protections.
• New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said that Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, "want to ... repeal the Affordable Care Act and elim nate protections for preexisting conditions." It's unclear what Trump would do, since he hasn't released a plan to replace the ACA. He said he would do so, if "we can come up With something that's better." Schumer, meanwhile, was wrong to
say, as he did on the Senate floor April 28, that the bill goes "back to the day when insurance companies could deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions." perorats and Republicans have made
competing claims on whether the latest version of the GOP health care bill maintains protections for people with preexisting medical conditions. President Trump has said, "Pre-existing conditions are in the bill. And I mandate it." Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer has said that
"insurance companies could deny coverage to those with pre-existing conditions."
Neither of those comments quite gets it right. The latest version offers lesser protections than the Affordable Care Act, but it doesn't allow insurers to deny coverage to someone with a health Who's right? Like everything else in health care, it's complicated.

Trump's orders and offers have started to fail: Hegseth's journalist loyalty oath, even Kristi Noem's airport propaganda video. Some universities for sure will take Trump's offer (though it will be challenged in court). But people have started saying no. That's a good thing. (h/t @robertkelchen.com)
Major airports refuse to air Kristi Noem video blaming Democrats for shutdown
Airport spokespeople say the decision was made because the message blaming Democrats for the government shutdown violates the Hatch Act.

Trump took office with a Israel-Hamas ceasefire in place, then announced a vision for Gaza as a US-owned resort, with most Palestinians living there gone. Israel restarted military ops in March and imposed famine. Thousands of dead Palestinians later, the Trump admin helped broker another ceasefire.
Opinion | Trump’s Nobel peace prize campaign is the least important part of the Gaza deal
If the ceasefire holds, the administration deserves much credit. But the fixation on Trump getting a prize distracts from things that actually matter.

Since the Alien Registration Act of 1940, every noncitizen has been required to carry their documents with them at ALL times. That applies to every green card holder, every tourist, every foreign student, etc...

No admin in the modern era has EVER tried to enforce this law.
(e)Personal possession of registration or receipt card; penalties
Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d). Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall upon conviction for each offense be fined not to exceed $100 or be imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

President Trump was just caught on a hot mic talking with the president of Indonesia.

He may have been talking about his business interests in the country–which would be exactly the kind of conflict of interest we’ve been warning about for years. 🧵

Trump's conversation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is caught on a hot mic. Hard to tell exactly what they are talking about, but Subianto asks Trump about meeting Eric Trump and Don Jr, who supposedly have nothing to do with government while they run the family business.

Politics has shifted from a battle of economics into a battle of epistemologies.

Our divisions are extrinsic versus memetic more than they are liberal versus conservative.

Authoritarianism is politicized apophenia. This is why it's so hard to argue with Trumpers. They don't believe in logic.
Trump super fans are impossible to argue with because they don’t actually believe in logic
The far-right worldview is incomprehensible until you realize that devotees believe truth flows from authority rather than reality

Media framing the Gaza deal and other international affairs around Trump’s quest for the Nobel peace prize highlights how much news and public discourse have become warped around one man’s pathologies.

Whether he gets praise is one of the least important thing about this.

I think the main barrier to honest, direct coverage from the mainstream media in Trump 1.0 was professional norms/reflexive both sides-ism. In 2.0, that's still a factor, but a bigger barrier may be ownership. Reporters/editors know that many media owners are wary of too much anti-Trump coverage.
