One of the most frustrating things about what's likely going to happen is that people are going to become quickly aware of all colonial spoils they assumed would be there forever, and that'll drive anger at the regime far more than any amount of more severe human suffering in the vulnerable.

Oh coffee, no big deal, just the global crop that shaped world history as empires created trade routes around it that enjoying has become ritual in so many cultures. And Americans are whining because Trump's tariffs mean we can't have coffee anymore?

At the University of Illinois, rolling blackouts and brownouts are expected in 2026 due to increased energy demands from A.I. Scientific labs are expected to be affected.

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

The potential for shit like this is one reason why groups like LUCE in Massachusetts urge people to report sightings to them so they and their partners can directly warn people. A decentralized network is a lot harder to shut down. No big tech company will be in ally in the fight against ICE.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, a Facebook group used by nearly 80,000 people to report sightings of federal immigration agents in the Chicago area has been taken down by the social media giant Meta, Facebook’s parent company.
Facebook suspends popular Chicago ICE-sightings group at Trump administration’s request
The group, "ICE Sighting-Chicagoland," has been increasingly used in the last five weeks of President Donald Trump’s intense deportation campaign to warn neighbors that federal agents are nearby.

#teaching #pedagogy folks: in a course that I've inherited there is a required group project. Looking for resources to help guide students in fundamentals of group work.

Group work is often something that they don't enjoy, but I'm also sure there are ways to make it manageable/constructive. Ideas?
dapati.bsky.social
Asking students to reflect on the best group project experiences they've ever had, followed by the worst, can set the stage really nicely for collaborative decision-making about what students want this experience to look like.
dapati.bsky.social
Lots of ideas! And happy to troubleshoot more specifically, too. To start:
1. In the design phase, making sure you have a group-worthy task
2. Teaching groups how to work together. Group contracts/promises, group roles, and stages of group development are all good ways into this
Group-Worthy Tasks
Carefully constructed group learning activities can foster students' academic and social growth and help close the achievement gap.

"free indirect discourse" is an absolutely terrible phrase to describe one of the most important features of prose fiction and we should have found a new term decades ago

Government workers 👇🏾
Lunch is on the house:

Being in the heart of downtown DC, we love that so many of our Federal employees stop by during lunch for a Donburi at China Chilcano or a Fútbol Club at Jaleo. And just because the government is shut down doesn't mean you have to miss out on your favorite lunch spot- because this time, its on us!
Join us for lunch from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM at any of our participating restaurants and enjoy a free lunch item when you present your government ID-you heard that right! Dine in with us Monday through Friday and choose your favorite: a sandwich at Jaleo, a donburi at China Chilcano, a wrap or pita at Zaytinya, or a torta at Oyamel.
We've always believed in serving our community with open arms and good food-no shutdown can stop that.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay I'd like to draw attention to the western #Alaska storm that is causing whole houses to float away into waters that will make you hypothermic in no time, especially around the town of Kotzebue. The latest on Fbook says the Coast Guard is there now.

There is a major storm with high winds causing severe flooding on SW Alaska near the Bering Sea and the Yukon Delta. This follows severe flooding in NW Alaska in Kotzebue earlier this week. A lot of native villages are going to need a lot of help and you know it's not coming from the feds.

Step 2: give ICE's entire bloated budget to the IRS
Step 3: record white collar crime task force kicking in penthouse doors and macing unresisting billionaires

This is happening right now, to a friend of mine in Chicago. This is a peaceful area, with no previous unrest or crime problem. Just people trying to live their lives. My heart hurts. They're having conversations no family should have to have.
A white box with text. "Y'all. They're tear gassing my neighborhood. Right by the place we get hummus from. Right by where we get the extra large pizzas for sleep overs. Tell your people."

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

Pleasant day out in my neighborhood in Chicago. There was a farmer’s market and people are out strolling, chatting, and sitting out on porches. Just like every weekend.

Except now most of us are wearing whistles to alert neighbors if unidentified guys in tactical gear show up to kidnap people.
