in 2016, shortly after the elections, I posted a summary of our experience in Turkey prior to moving to here, and shared the fear of a similar path. Our US friends reassured us "it would never happen this way here, we have established systems, checks & balances etc."

It is a “cancel culture” when they are denied a single talk in an event due to their hate speech, but they don’t see a problem of “cracking down on people” for the speech they don’t like.

I'm sad to report that Rainer (Rai) Weiss passed away yesterday at age 92. Rai developed the design for LIGO, he and Kip got it funded, trained countless researchers, and received the 2017 Nobel Prize. Rai always had time for students and treated us as equals. May his memory be a blessing
