Yeah, and the great thing about Steam in particular is games from years ago that I thought 'ooo that looks interesting but I'm not shelling out for that now' are now available for a cut down price.

Also, like, I am an old man who has no truck with your assassins creeds and your team shooters. It's still a great time to be a gamer for me because there legions of great Indy developers making games that work very well for me and I don't have to shell out for a PS5 for it

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Oh yes. It's still overall poorer than the UK. But the gap is growing small enough that I question whether it can just be put down to the end of communism at this point. There are post communist countries (Poland isn't quite there yet) that are wealthier than the poorer Southern European States

Though I think with the UK you can at least say that wealth growth has been, on the relatively objective measures, at best stagnant for a long time. The US is interesting to me because that's not true for them.

This is an exact encapsulation of why I moved to Bluesky.

No amount of handwringing in the Atlantic about how I owe some eternal Promethean suffering to the discourse is going to make me stay on a site I hate, that stopped doing anything for me professionally years ago.

Well – no. Bluesky may or may not be, as one centre-right friend who felt unwelcome put it, “self-righteous island”. But the idea that’s why we went is nonsense. That I’ve largely stopped posting on a site that’s done more to shape my career and social circle than the rest of the internet combined is less about avoiding rival opinions (I love arguing with people who are wrong!) than with the fact the site simply became unusable. It stopped generating the things (good jokes, interesting debate, clicks) I wanted; it became extremely good at generating the things (racists, pornbots, racist pornbots) I did not.

seems like a non-insignificant percentage of rage against the machine's fanbase are young republican men driving SUVs bopping their head to anti-oil, pro-immigrant songs thinking the lyrics are about how they wish their suburban parents would get off their back
