Scariest non-fic I'd recommend: @annaleen.bsky.social's Stories Are Weapons, We Wish To Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch, The Lucifer Effect by "that" Philip Zimbardo, Yanis Varoufakis' Technofeudalism and Naomi Klein's Doppleganger.

Got to shout out the novel that scared me the most for The Stylist's round-up of spooky reads by spooky writers: Mariana Enriquez's Our Share of Night. www.stylist.co.uk/books/best-h... (paywalled).
Black and white photograph of novelist Lauren Beukes against a red background, overlaid with the image of the front cover of Mariana Enriquez's Our Share of Night, white type over a dark blue/black cover featuring the image of a midnight-black hand outstretched and clawing at the air with long golden talons, the skin flecked with gold. "Lauren Beukes recommends…

Our Share Of Night by Mariana Enriquez

Argentinian writer Mariana Enriquez understands that the real horror is people – and everything we’re capable of and how we justify it to ourselves. Set against the backdrop of Argentina’s ‘dirty war’ and its aftermath, Our Share Of Night follows a father and son born with a terrible magical gift who are trying to escape a centuries-old cult that wants to enslave them to The Darkness and their own burgeoning influence. There’s plenty of gruesome imagery I will never, ever get out of my head, inspired by bruja witchcraft and political atrocities, but the bloody heart(break) of the story is the familial relationship and all the frightening and awful ways we fail ourselves and each other. ALSO. ALSO. Needing us to find Europeans who condemned him for his actions at the time--and there are many! So many! My God so many!--is also some white supremacist bullshit, because the TAINO PEOPLE HE WAS MURDERING CERTAINLY CONDEMNED HIM FOR IT AND THEY WERE HUMAN BEINGS OF HIS TIME TOO.

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

One effect of 'AI' is that it actually atrophies our stores of information and knowledge. Explain to me how this is progress 🫠

I was in game dev for 15 years and had 2 actual vacations in all that time.

You stop understanding how stressed you are until your body begins to inexplicably fail you.

Believe old game devs when we tell you: burnout is real, it's painful. Be honest with yourself, take the breaks when you need them.
I've been burnt out for so long, I only just realized how long. I went from crunch at Iridium into crunch at Giant Squid with no break. About 3 years. It was too long.

Seeing people nonchalantly post stuff like makes me feel like I'm going crazy honestly.
A post from an academic on blue sky that says: "I'm learning about "prompt engineering" when asking LLMs to extract data. I now add this to all instructions:

Style
Be concise, analytic, and specific (cite page/figure if provided). If essential info is missing, keep going but flag Unclear and exact data needed. Never invent data.

A short, and super useful, four part thread on structure and recipes. Succinctly and clearly explained.
maryrobinettekowal.com
My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
ddwardiswriting.bsky.social
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

Spotify platforms Joe Rogan and other right wing manosphere accounts.

They barely pay the artists.

There are plenty of reasons to boycott them.

Now they’re allowing ICE recruitment ads in their “commercials”.

They’ve bent a knee, and we should all cancel.

Spotify is now running recruitment ads for ICE.

It’s time to cancel your account.
