I’ve yet to read the details, but this was my first thought too. I’ve always thought Marden’s independence was important to help ensure that the "blue skies" research it funds, really was that.

✨Excited that the main project of my PhD is now available as a pre-print on #bioRxiv

Here, we used #CryoET to visualise mitochondrial proteostatic stress and together with SPA #CryoEM shed light into the functional cycle of the Hsp60:10 chaperone system. #TeamTomo

Ah, a classic moment of @nature.com recognizing the scientific contributions of both genders: man and machine.

Lol the Nobels can't even acknowledge women's contribution to discovery. But sure let's acknowledge The Machines.
Headline from an article in Nature this week that states "Prizes must recognize machine contributions to discovery. The future of science will be written by humans and machines together. Awards should reflect that reality."

My first time sitting down with a real sample. Phase separated membrane in a yeast lysosomal vacuole. Green is the V-ATPase, in the liquid disordered domain, and magenta is Ivy1, a protein that associates with the liquid ordered domain. This vacuole is about 2 microns in diameter.

I never thought watching microtubules break could be so interesting! I learned so much about mechanics and modeling in this work and am extremely grateful to Archie Geng for leading the way. Also huge thanks to François Nédélec for creating Cytosim and providing advice along the way.

Geng, @kjverhey1.bsky.social et al find that KIF1C forms condensates where the exposed #kinesin motor domains entangle nearby #microtubules, causing them to bend & break in a process dependent on motor processivity, cluster properties, cytoplasmic viscosity, & MT anchors rupress.org/jcb/article/...

Why fundamental research matters? It can have far-reaching implications for human health, as shown in latest Nobel Prize win on discovering why immune system does not destroy the body.

Make funding fundamental science a priority - there is no translation without it!
