Trauma survivors very frequently notice that the cultural norms around relationships & other priorities don't especially resonate w/ us. And if we can manage the reflexive shame about "not fitting in" w/ cultural attitudes or desires, we realize: that's a feature, not a glitch.

Giving ourselves permission to be assertive can be a b*tch when we're working against a history of fawning & freezing.

How I or any other survivor does recovery has f*ck all to do w/ your needs or progress today. Your job is not to do recovery as good as, or better than, anybody else.

Your job is to stay focused on your recovery arc & your micro choices today. Anything else is a detour.

This is the asymmetry in our politics and media. If this was the other way around, Biden had pardoned someone then charged with trying to kill Trump, it would be the biggest story in America and every Republican commentator, congressman, news outlet, would be screaming about it in unison.

In trauma recovery we are not going to always be motivated. Our nervous system has been fried, & we're rebuilding it. We can't count on or wait for "motivation."

We're going to have to lean into discipline-- realistic, compassionate, non-shaming discipline-- to keep us on track.

You are not "wrong" or "bad" or "weak" for not wanting to revisit old wounds. Nobody wants to.

A huge challenge in trauma recovery is confronting & managing our very normal, very human desire to never think about that sh*t again, to gloss over it, to minimize it, to belittle it.
