We know — from first principles — that LLMs can only create AI slop.

Why do people keep needing empirical tests?

The intractability proof (a.k.a. Ingenia theorem) implies that any attempts to scale up AI-by-Learning to situations of real-world, human-level complexity will consume an astronomical amount of resources (see Box 1 for an explanation). 13/n
Box 1 in the paper, intuitively explaining the implications of the intractability result.

Just here to remind everyone that while the federal government is shutdown, all study sections at the NIH are currently on hold. Another blow to science and to early career scientists like myself with young labs and research groups. Very hard to remain positive about this career path.

5/ But here's the even darker kicker.

The House Republicans aren't even in town. Speaker Johnson told them to stay away from DC. They haven't been here in nearly a month. Refusing to show up for work. An unprecedented, unplanned 4 week recess.

And why?

Alternatively, don't apply to jobs in Texas
alexwild.bsky.social
If you are applying for a faculty job in Texas, argue for a higher salary than you'd get at other institutions. The lack of real tenure protections is a de facto compensation cut and you should negotiate accordingly.

Texas search committees know that getting good candidates is an uphill battle.

If you make "controversial statements" outside of classroom, that the President of the university dislikes, you can be summarily fired even if you are tenured.

Given his distaste for the NIH, I'd be amazed if he doesn't take this opportunity to absolutely destroy it.

Russell Vought has announced that "mass firings [RIFs] have begun."

Lawless. The RIFs in the spring were illegal, as Judge Illston outlined. Yes, the conservative SCOTUS supermajority lawlessly signed off. But the Calvinball Court is not doing law.

Congress can stop this. A thread: 1/
'RIFs have begun.' Vought announces start of mass firings during government shutdown
The White House budget office said Friday that mass firings of federal workers have started in an attempt to exert more pressure on Democratic lawmakers as the government shutdown continues.

5. I don't know that US will ever be a stable place for science again. I know that sounds nihilistic but the 50% of the country that voted for Trump is not going anywhere and they appear to be ok with blowing up the entire research infrastructure for shits and giggles.

When I was in TX, you could get your kid into the public school gifted program by having a third-party analysis of your child's intelligence. It created an entire industry of pay-to-play for gifted program admission.

This is the thing they'll never understand about "wokeness" or "political correctness" - huge organizations didn't implement these policies because of "cancel culture" or secret communists, they did it to stay competitive and viable. It's what people wanted

I think the R01 is basically a non-starter at NIGMS now. Data from NIH Reporter for new and competing awards, comparing number of R01s issued relative to R35s (MIRA). This has major ramifications for basic science and basic science investigators that are not yet in the MIRA pool
Graph showing total R35+R01 awards issued by NIGMS from 2020 to 2025. R01 in black showing a steep decline. R35 showing an increase. Total awards in 2025 slightly up from 2024 but these years are lower than 2020-2023
