'sit' is, I believe, the only English word to preserve all of its original IE ablaut grades:

0: nest
e: set
long e: seat
o: sat
long o: soot
yvanspijk.bsky.social
Historically, the word 'nest' consists of two parts.

The part 'ne-' is related to 'nether', while '-st' is related to 'sit'.

The distant ancestor of 'nest' meant "place to sit down".

'Nest' is also related to Spanish 'nido' and its Romance relatives.

I'm a huge fan of standardized tests because they help match students who are more likely to succeed, increase social mobility, and diversify societies leaders.

Yep. Every fancy school that tried this eventually analyzed their data and realized they’d done something very dumb.

Princeton is requiring #SAT scores again for admission because test scores predict student success
But using SAT scores also increases social mobility!
Rich students (top 1%) benefit immensely when there are no test scores because they have legacy & non-academic points (which don't predict success)

My instinct is to tell them that IB and CB are ubiquitous properties of selective attention and not the result of modern life.

But on thinking about it, I can imagine that urban life makes it easier to ignore the physical characteristics of the person you're talking to. Any evidence for this?

@irahyman.bsky.social My students in an attention seminar are asking whether change and inattentional blindness are products of the dense information environment of a city. I was wondering if any one has run e.g. the door study on someone in the country. >

I’ve been asking myself just how much society views high-end academics as a luxury good - they cost a lot and the pay offs are vague and mostly prestige based (no offense to these two), and make sense politically mostly at times of high economic and political stability

You know that feeling after you accomplish a series of household tasks that you COULD have put off forever but you did them right away? What's that feeling called?

But this is why simple inflation calculations like this over long spans of time (basically anything pre-1950) is a bad idea and why actual comparative economic studies will use more sophisticated international dollar (or 'Geary-Khamis' dollars), though even those struggle pre-1900 or so.

Facebook reminds me that this is the anniversary of when a magpie walked into the tutorial room and I had to evacuate the class as it started swooping around the room. It then pooped on a desk before leaving.

You don’t have to be called Steve or Stephen to work at Blackpool, but it does help.
A club statement from Blackpool saying Steve Bruce has been sacked along with coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence. Stephen Dobbie and Steve Banks will take temporary charge.

The Ig Nobel is incredible , one year an Indian guy won it for calculating the average surface area of an elephant and during his acceptance they had an elephant hold up a sign with the surface area of the scientist on it, they do showbiz better than the Oscars
