Trump: "I had a very wealthy person who called -- a donor, a great gentleman -- and he said, 'if there's any money necessary, shortfall, for the paying of the troops, then I will pay it.' Meaning he will pay it. How about that?"

NEW: A proposal for rebuilding Gaza that's been shared with the Trump admin references Tesla, IKEA, TSMC, and tons of other companies. I reached out to them—none had discussed or agreed to any work in Gaza. Some had no idea they were mentioned in this proposal:

Sure, but he still couldn’t run a casino in the same way he can’t run a country. He does succeed at being corrupt, tho.

He failed at that. Spectacularly.

This is a big piece people shouldn’t overlook. It’s hard not to think about all the people who argued for a "less restrictive" culture while utilizing their proximity, or wink and nod affiliation, with these people, and not believe this has all been an open secret among the press.

it also highlights a big point of the political project across social networks, which is to find ways to make this kind of dehumanizing and hatred less surprising and acceptable as a part of a culture. its why i've always felt weird about the mainstreaming of so much 4chan langauge and meme stuff

Here's Atlantic City after he got through with it. He ran a casino into bankruptcy. I wonder what his philosophy is.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

solid piece from Garbage Day. in the aftermath of the 2010s - which in retrospect now look like a golden age of social media - it's clear that the priorities of platform companies shifted to 1a) ensure mass politics can never again emerge on platforms & 1b) keep the content pipe open for AI training

The Trump admin is fully powered by the attention economy. A universe of dumbasess talking to other dumbasess, built on the assumption our tastes have grown so rotten and atrophied that we can't even remember a world where we weren't inundated by worthless slop.

it's very funny to me that his delusional misreadings can include both Watchmen, one of the great 20th century novels, and One Piece, a fun comic serial for children. But it's not good that this man is genuinely mad and a major political and financial force in the United States of America.

“American Ultra” (2015) was a flawed, film, but the symbolism when the protagonist fights another mind controlled assassin amongst the abundance of a burning supermarket always haunts me as a symbol of what this modern tech era of billionaire lords and social media serfs has done to American culture
Scene from the 2015 film “American Ultra” where two mind controlled assassins confront each other in a burning supermarket market. One says to the other: “I'm sorry. I can't control it. The things that they did to my head. They made you like they made me.”

I’m a big fan of the ellipsis myself, but a way to make the em dash respectable is to bring back how it used to be paired with other punctuation marks
