I think people who work at maritime museums are awesome nerds. If you go there add say, “I’m a writer and I have a question…” you’ll probably end the day full of great random knowledge about how barrels are put together and sea shanties and how sailors sleep and so on.

I’m in the Melville Society, and I read some other maritime-focused writers, and I know soooo little about ships. But I did once go to Mystic Harbor Museum, and hauled on a line on the Charles W Morgan, and threw a harpoon, and rowed in a whaleboat with other professors, and that was a lot of fun.

In my high school, the Young Republicans were all the biggest bullies, drawn together to form the chapter. The leader went to prison a couple years after I graduated, for beating his girlfriend’s baby to death after a lot of abuse (which she participated in but wasn’t convicted of).
