Why are people who look like me called "prisoners" when they get kidnapped, but the people who resemble Europeans are called "hostages" ... and then in the same breath, I'll get accused of being "woke" or "radical" or even "antisemitic" just for bringing this up because the answer is uncomfortable.

Yeah because most people mean Liberal Dems when they say "the Left." Only self-identified Leftists see themselves as set apart, the True Left, as much different from Liberals as they are from Conservatives. Everyone else sees Liberals and Leftists as pretty similar.

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Whenever I bump into someone quoting Thomas Edison, it reminds me not just to be wary of the harm some of these tech billionaires are engaged in, but also of perpetuating fragments of their legacy that might create more people like them later. Truly a plague.
