This is f*cking ridiculous, especially coming from a government that doesn't know the meaning of 'dog-whistle' and thinks its 'Island of Strangers' is a context free … dog whistle. Bampots at best, the lot of them.

🌹After 21 Years Behind Bars, a Palestinian Novelist Who Helped Redefine Palestinian Prison Literature Steps Into Freedom

“Peace be upon Gaza, on the day it fights, endures, and resists this colonialism,” said novelist Bassem Khandaqji yesterday, in his first public comments after being released and deported to Egypt under the Gaza ceasefire and captive exchange agreement.

Born in Nablus in 1983, Khandaqji was arrested in 2004 during his final year at university and later sentenced to three life terms by an Israeli military court.

Israel accused him of belonging to a Fatah-linked cell allegedly involved in the Carmel Market bombing in Tel Aviv, which killed three Israelis and injured more than fifty.

He denied any part and there is no public evidence of his participation in the attack. His arrest and sentencing came during a broader wave of detentions during the Second Intifada, when Israel frequently charged Palestinians under sweeping “security” laws.

For over two decades, Khandaqji was held in various Israeli prisons, including high-security facilities like Gilboa, Hadareem, and Megiddo. He used that time to transform his cell into what friends called a “cultural operations room,” producing novels and poetry that helped redefine Palestinian prison literature, Al Jazeera Arabic reports.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, he avoided autobiographical accounts of captivity, believing that literature endures beyond politics and circumstance.

In 2022, he penned a novel called, “A Mask Dyed the Color of the Sky” about Nur, a Palestinian archaeologist living in a refugee camp near Ramallah who discovers a blue Israeli identity card in the pocket of an old coat. Over time he assumes the identity of the card’s owner, “Ur,” in order to infiltrate Israeli-controlled spaces.

Friends in France translated and published his books including his 2022 novel while he was still imprisoned, and his family signed novels at launch events in Ramallah on his behalf. In 2024, Bassem Khandaqji was awarded the International Prize for Arabic Fiction—often called the “Arabic Booker.”

On Monday, the Israeli military released 250 Palestinian political prisoners, along with over 1,700 Palestinians who had been held hostage by the Israeli military in detention without charge.

Israel has destroyed the "ceasefire" in hours.

It is murdering Palestinians, and maintaining its illegal siege.

Not a ceasefire.

Today, Israel slaughtered Palestinians and resumed siege. Not a "ceasefire"

Making life more difficult for migrants helps nobody.
Making it harder for people fleeing war and persecution to find safety helps nobody.
Labour pushing xenophobia as policy helps nobody.
Pandering to far right politics doesn't combat far right rhetoric or "build trust in politicians"

We can all bitch and moan and call out the utterly contemptible policies suggested by the likes of Reform and the Conservatives, but if that same condemnation is not applied to Labour then it shows it is not about supporting migrants, it is about being party political. 2/

If you've never been to Gaza, you won't appreciate what the yellow line means. Basically Israel now holds most of Gaza's small but important agricultural land. Continued Israeli occupation, which I judge the likely outcome, makes Gaza even more unliveable and more dependent on outside goods.

In every possible way Labour's changes to immigration rules are profoundly stupid and damaging.
Not only will they ruin lives of migrants, they will cripple the economy, cost jobs, undermine crucial infrastructure etc etc. Everyone suffers with anti-immigration policies.

Qatar gave Trump a $55B golf deal, a golden flying palace, laughed at his jokes and told him he's pretty, and now in payback he's letting them build a Qatari military base on US soil? Ohhhh, can you imagine another president doing this and the GOP not completely losing their shit? I can't.
